EC- Two-Fisted Tales #33 - COMPLETE STORY (Wood)

Finally, something by Wally Wood. I’m not going to write an essay on Wally Wood (at least not today), but I could easily do so. Originally hired by Will Eisner, Wood went on to work at EC, Marvel, DC, Avon, Gold Key, and more companies than I can name, as well as start his own company, and have an impact on artists that still shows up today. Sadly, he fought illness and alcoholism for much of his life and took his own life in 1981. While at Marvel, he penciled and inked Daredevil in issues 5-8, and designed DD’s distinctive red costume. Personally, I think he was at the top of his game while he was at EC. EC publisher William Gaines once stated, "Wally may have been our most troubled artist... I'm not suggesting any connection, but he may have been our most brilliant". His Sci Fi work was amazing, but I’ve always liked the war stories. If you haven’t had a chance to pick up the IDW Wally Wood Artist’s Edition, it’s well worth it. The detail of the pages is amazing. So, anyway, here we are. I grabbed my first EC story. From Two-Fisted Tales #33, take a look at the complete 7 page story, “Atom Bomb”.

It’s a classic EC story, script by Harvey Kurtzman, filled with suspense, twists, and a moral. The splash is amazing, but take your time and look at the detail and inking on the other pages. The use of the shadows and how Wood changed the light source in different scenes to create drama is a lesson in itself. Wood’s detail in indicative of his EC work. The storytelling is strong, but I think you would expect to see that for anyone who trained under Eisner. But, what really grabbed me about this story is the inking. Look at how Toshio is framed on page 2. He is lit from behind as befits the family hero. Contrast that with how he is lit on page 6. There, before he dies, the lighting is flat, almost bleak. More amazing, in my opinion, is how Wood handled the actual bomb burst. The splash is awesome, but look at the panels on pages 3 and 4. I could go on, but just enjoy.
