XAVI Xavier Vives Mateu
The Catalan artist Xavier Vives Mateu, who uses the pseudonym Xavi, is mainly known for his work in Disney comics. However, he began his career in the underground publications of the 1970s, such as El Cuervo, El Pulpo, Graficolorancia, Hara-Kiri, Hermano Lobo, Lunes Deportivo and Rock Comix. In 1984 he published the comic book 'El Caso Bugatti' with Ediciones Amaika. He started to work for the Danish publisher Gutenberghus (now Egmont) in the mid 1980s. At first associated with the Comicup studios, then working directly for Egmont, he started out with drawing mainly 'Beagle Boys' stories and covers starring 'Donald Duck'. Xavi has drawn stories starring Disney movie and TV characters, such as 'Basil from Baker Street', 'The Little Mermaid' and 'Duck Tales'. Since the 1980s, he has also produced material for the Danish pocket publications like Jumbobog, Mickey Mysterier and Onkel Joakim, starring 'Donald Duck', 'Superdonald', 'Mickey Mouse' and the 'Beagle Boys'. Xavi is the artist of the official movie adaptations of the Disney films 'Oliver & Co', 'The Little Mermaid' and 'Aladdin'. Since 2000, he has illustrated several long adventure stories starring 'Mickey Mouse'. Besides his Disney work, Xavier Vives works on advertising assignments, and for the press and MAD magazine.
