Carl Ed (1890-1959) is most well known for his comic strip Harold Teen, which captured the slang and mood of teenagers in the 1920s. The strip was sort of a pre-Archie strip, before Montana's creation came into existence. While not the most Earth-shattering artist ever to wield a pen, Ed (pronounced Eed) had a bright and bouncy style, and knew how to deliver a gag. He also had a great effect on a number of young cartoonists in the 1920s, as he worked as a cartoon instructor at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, teaching such young 'uns as Roy Crane and Russ Johnson.
