Cartoonist FAITH ERIN HICKS Adventures of Superhero Girl

      Faith Erin Hicks is a cartoonist from Vancouver, Canada. When Dark Horse Comics published her Adventures of Superhero Girl comics as a book collection in 2013, I read a few samples and preordered the book. I loved it and passed it along to my niece. Over the past year, I've read it online and from the library multiple times. Faith created the comic in a Sunday newspaper strip format for The Coast newspaper in Halifax and published it online. Superhero Girl is a young Canadian trying to establish herself in a new city with a low crime rate. She also deals with mundane life problems such as finding a job to pay her share of the apartment rent. Since this discovery, I've been using the library to catch up on Faith's earlier work.

      Nothing Could Possibly Go Wrong is published by First Second Books. Faith adapted the story as a graphic novel from a manuscript by Prudence Shen. Set in a high school, the protagonist Charlie is the basketball team captain with connections to the science club through his friend Nate and the cheerleaders via his ex-girlfriend Holly. The science club and cheerleaders are rivals for student body funds and Charlie gets caught up in the middle. I've also read this story multiple times in the last year.

      Faith's previous First Second book is Friends with Boys, the story of Maggie who is going to public high school for the first time after being home schooled by her now-absent mother. I've also read Faith's The War at Ellsmere (2008) and Zombies Calling (2007) from San Jose's SLG Publishing.

      Faith was a SDCC special guest in 2013, but I missed her due to helping out at my brother's booth. She came back in 2014 thanks to her Eisner Award nominations. I contacted her ahead of the con and gave her a list of pages I wanted. I met her at the First Second booth at the Thursday 1 pm signing and purchased seven pages. On Saturday morning, I read Stan Sakai's congratulatory Facebook message to Faith for winning the Eisner Award for the Best Publication for Kids for Adventures of Superhero Girl. I saw Faith when she was a special guest at the Alternative Press Expo in October 2014.

      The Nameless City (2016) book debut came the week of Emerald City Comicon where I was able to buy more pages. First Second sent Faith on a tour including the Toronto Comic Arts Festival and Thought Bubble. Set in an often-fought-over city, the protagonists are a young man from the current rulers and a young woman native of the city. Nameless City was followed by The Stone Heart in 2017 and The Divided Earth in 2018. Celebrating the final book of the trilogy, I was delighted to meet Faith at Linden Tree Books September 29, 2018. She gave a wonderful demonstration and kept kids enthralled. Since our last meeting, Faith collaborated with writer Rainbow Rowell for Pumpkinheads and wrote the prose novel Comics Will Break Your Heart. The next release will be a redrawn and fully colored One Year at Ellsmore in July 2020.
