David Stone Martin (1913-1992) was a prolific American illustrator whose work appeared in all of the major magazines in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. But it was the record album covers that Martin was most well known for. Influenced by Ben Shahn's artwork, Martin employed a wonderfully expressive line in his illustrations, and his work on jazz album cover art of the period practically defined the style. David Stone Martin's work is held in many of the major art museum collections in the United States, including the Metropolitan Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
