Billy Ireland (1880-1935) was a native Ohioan who spent his entire career in his home state, even though he had numerous opportunities to take his talents to New York City. Ireland began working for the Columbus Dispatch in Columbus, Ohio shortly after he graduated high school in 1898. He continued working for the newspaper until his death in 1935. Ireland drew four to seven editorial cartoons each week, but it was his weekly Sunday feature, The Passing Show, for which he was most well known. The Passing Show was a compilation feature of sorts, presenting local, state, national, and international news tidbits. Ireland had some ongoing characters, such as Uncle Jerry and the Jedge, who frequently appeared in the feature. Ireland never signed The Passing Show in the traditional way, but used a shamrock on a character in the title panel, often a self-caricature. Ireland described himself as the janitor of The Passing Show, and his self-caricatures show a round little man in overalls.
It's also worth mentioning that Billy Ireland was an important cartooning mentor to a couple of kids named Milton Caniff and Noel Sickles. It was Caniff that Ireland gave that fabled advice, "Stick to your ink pots".
