Comic strips cartoonist sketches

      My favorite comic strip is Charles M. Schulz's Peanuts. My parents bought us some of the paperback collections when we were kids. A Charlie Brown Christmas and It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown are superb animated adaptations. In 1992, I was able to attend a Cartoon Art Museum lecture by Charles Schulz and met him afterwards for an autograph. My sole example of Schulz art is a book sketch discovered in a used book store. I still reread the Peanuts books and am collecting The Complete Peanuts from Fantagraphics.
      Old favorite strips include Hal Foster's Prince Valiant and Russ Manning's Tarzan. In these cases, I can only afford the collections. Recent favorites are Bill Watterson's Calvin & Hobbes, Michael Jantze's The Norm, Frank Cho's Liberty Meadows, and Patrick McDonnell's Mutts. While Bill Watterson is famous as a recluse, many strip cartoonists are coming to comic conventions these days.
      The Cartoon Art Museum used to hold original art auctions in the 1990's and I bought my first examples there. One of my favorite acquisitions is Dik Browne's Hi & Lois with the reference to the Errol Flynn movie The Sea Hawk. The Museum continues to hold fine exhibits and host cartoonists' talks and book signings. Many of the cartoonists will do a quick sketch as well as signing.
