Hoffnung, Gerard
Gerard Hoffnung (1925-1959) was a German-born artist and musician who came to renown in England, moving there in 1938 to escape the Nazis. Over the next two decades in England, Hoffnung became known as a cartoonist, tuba player, impresario, broadcaster and raconteur.
After training at two art colleges, Hoffnung taught for a few years, and then turned to drawing, on the staff of English and American publications, and later as a freelancer. He published a series of cartoons on musical themes, and illustrated the works of novelists and poets.
In 1956, Hoffnung began the first of his Hoffnung Festivals, in which classical music was spoofed for comic effect. Hoffnung died from a cerebral hemorrhage in 1959, at the age of 34.
The obituary in The Times of London wrote of Hoffnung: "Hoffnung was among other things an artist, a musician, a linguist, a raconteur, a Quaker, a bon viveur, a prison visitor and a mime. It is usual to say that a man has left behind a gap that cannot be filled. For Gerard Hoffnung there would be needed a handful of men, all of them greatly gifted."
These three drawings came from a gentleman who attended the Stamford School, a public school 100 miles north of London, in the 1960s. While helping clean up and organize the art department for a move in the 1960s,he ran across a portfolio containing eight or nine Hoffnung original drawings. Hoffnung had been the Art Master at the school in the mid-1940s and these pieces had been left by him. The young student was allowed to keep these three drawings.
