The Batman Adventures
Sleek. Stylish. Revolutionary. Batman: The Animated Series was all these things and more to a 13 year old me in the fall of 1992. So when a comic based on the show debuted at the same time, there was no way I was going to pass that up.
While it would be virtually impossible to capture the same magic I saw every afternoon, Kelley Puckett managed to infuse each issue with the same heart, humor and pathos to be found on the small screen.
Then, seven issues into the run, Mike Parobeck joined Puckett as the regular series artist… and brought the book to a whole other level.
Beautifully inked by Rick Burchett, Mike’s work always looked fluid and effortless. Action leaped off his pages in big, bold panels, and he infused his characters with a softness and expressiveness that did justice to the source material without being a slave to the straighter angles of the show’s design.
Sadly, Mike passed away far too young. His legacy, however, will be long remembered by fellow children of the 1990s.
