Authority Figures
I came so late to the Wildstorm party that The Authority by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch was actually my introduction to the upstart comic company (and eventual DC imprint.) Fortunately, my cousin Joe Hedges literally wrote the book on Wildstorm's history, and I have him to thank for catching me up on everything I missed. Still, it never got better than Apollo and Midnighter, whether in the Authority or Ellis' Stormwatch. I didn't hold out much hope that DC would do well by these characters when they were brought into DC continuity, but Steve Orlando, ACO, Fernando Blanco, Tim Seeley, Tom King, and Mikel Janin proved me wrong. More please.
