This was the first of Marvel’s quarterly “Unlimited” titles, a line which eventually grew to include Spider-Man Unlimited, Midnight Sons Unlimited, X-Men Unlimited, and 2099 Unlimited. These were all deluxe titles, holding nothing back (including price) in order to feature their characters at their best. This idea seems especially appropriate in the Fantastic Four’s case. The team’s first appearance in the summer of 1961 marked the start of the Marvel Age of Comics. In issue #3, publisher Stan Lee began using the cover of Fantastic Four to trumpet their importance. By the next issue—and ever after—it was billed as “The World’s Greatest Comic Magazine.” Unfortunately, the hundreds of issues that followed included more than a few mediocre runs. Fantastic Four Unlimited attempts to put the “Great” back in the World’s Greatest Comic Magazine, featuring excellent stories, art, and production values
