Clubb, John Scott
John Scott Clubb (1875-1934) began his career in 1900 at the Rochester Herald, later the Times-Union, where his daily cartoons appeared on the editorial pages for 34 years. His readership extended beyond the local area and his cartoons were reproduced in magazines and newspapers nationwide. He was widely recognized by both casual readers and colleagues for his ability to combine astute social and political commentary with a talent for communicating ideas succinctly through his highly skilled drawings. Local, national and international politics were the mainstay of his output, but he was also known for his portrayal of “cracker barrel” characters discussing world affairs while sitting around a country store stove. His most famous of these characters was Joel Baggs, featured in a small panel titled, Joel Baggs, He Sez, Sez He. Often shortened to Joel Baggs Sez, the panel was nationally syndicated. I'm not sure how many papers the panel ran in, or how early it started. The earliest one I've found is from June 7, 1911, though I have found an earlier reference to the character on March 28 of the same year. The character and his country philosophy bears a resemblance to Kin Hubbard's Abe Martin, whose character was a Midwestern version of Clubb's.
Born in 1875 in Halls Corners, New York, Clubb showed a talent for caricature early in his childhood. He eventually attended art school, first at the Art Academy of Cincinnati and then the Art Students League in New York before returning to Rochester. He died suddenly in 1934.
