Jim Woodring Pupshaw and Pushpaw original watercolours

Original watercolour paintings for pages 14, 15 and 16, the final three pages of Jim Woodring's delightful picture book, Pupshaw and Pushpaw, being a rare early solo outing for them away from Frank. Here our favourite Pups snuggle down after their exciting day. The sizes of the images vary, from 7 x 8 inches to 7.5 x 8.5 inches. Painted twenty years ago now, in 2003, and first published by Presspop in April 2004, Woodring's colours glow jewel-like in these watercolours, putting to shame Presspop's rather dull printing. This book has always been one of my favourite works from Woodring, innocent and joyous and full of love. I bought most of the pages of the book directly from Jim in 2004. In 2006 he asked if I would mind loaning a number of pieces to show at the FIBD (Festival International de la Bande Dessinée) at Angoulême in France. Sure enough I was soon contacted by Jean-Pierre Mercier, curator at the Centre National de la Bande Dessinee et de l'Image. I ended up loaning six of the watercolours and the Sprank prelims. To quote Woodring from one of his letters to me from around this time: 'That book holds a special place in my heart. I painted these during a time in my life when everything was going extraordinarily well, and to me they are souvenirs of those happy, well balanced, productive days.' It is with some reluctance that I am selling these, they have also meant a lot to me. They belong together, I'll not break them up, sorry.
