JIM MITCHELL: Co-Founding Member of KRUPP COMICS WORKS, INC. (With DENIS KITCHEN)Jim Mitchell (born April 28, 1949) is an American underground cartoonist from Milwaukee. Mitchell was part of the late-1960s/early-1970s Milwaukee underground comix scene and a co-founder of the Krupp Comics/Kitchen Sink group (with Denis Kitchen and Don Glassford).[1][2][3] In the early 1970s, Mitchell (then a Marquette University student) regularly created strips such as "Smile" for the underground newspaper The Bugle, which were subsequently syndicated to other underground and college newspapers via the Krupp Syndicate. His strips (and covers) appeared in The Bugle; in three issues of his own comic, Smile (1971-1972); and in other comix, including Teen-Age Horizons of Shangrila, Mom's Homemade Comics, Bizarre Sex, Pro Junior, and Hungry Chuck Biscuit's Comics & Stories. Mitchell was imprisoned in Mexico for four and a half years for possession of marijuana which prevented his involvement in the further evolution of the underground scene, but was released in late 1977. Mr Mitchell was a Co-Founding member of Krupp Comics Works, Inc. of Milwaukee (with Denis Kitchen), contributed Cover Artwork to the Milwaukee/Madison Bugle American -a 60’s & 70’s Subversive Radical newspaper which earned Mr. Mitchell a prominent place on Nixon’s enemy list along with dear friend John Lennon whom befriended Jim after his cover depiction of John smoking a joint with Richard Nixon on the cover of the Comic Book “Smile #1”. Jim also hung out with Jim Morrison (Jim Mitchell was Morrison’s Doppkeganger) and Cat Stevens among many other notable figures. Jim also designed what is acknowledged as the 1st Concert T-Shirt when commissioned by HUMBLE PIE -Peter Frampton. This shirt was initially only for the band. However, when the crew and audience members inquired how they too, could get a shirt, a new industry was born. Mitchell still owns the Original Artwork but it is not for sale at present. Mitchell also designed the T-Shrts for the 1982 Jamaica World Music Festival. Currently Not For Sale David Nesta Marley (Bob and Rita’s son sold these same shirts for Mitchell when David was only 14; until he was robbed at gunpoint of @ 1000 shirts. David currently is a musician and changed his name to “Ziggy”. Incidentally, Jim Mitchell is David’s (“Ziggy”) G-dfather.
