Vintage Euro comic books - Sam et Sally
Sam and Sally were wealthy 1970s married adventurers in print and on TV - classic pulp entertainment and probably fun to draw. He's chiseled and wears flairs, she's a delightful handful and often wears nothing (print version not TV!). With action, wit and charm, these adventures come across as a kind of adult Enid Blyton meets Ian Fleming - from the Famous Five and Bond come the 'Chic Couple'. The original 1950s novels by MG Braun have been well adapted to the 1970s with their now vintage graphic visualisation and scenarios presented by the artists. The best of these, for the Sam et Sally series, seems to be the Spanish artist Jose Pizarro who sadly lost his sight in the 1980s. It is interesting to follow a stylistic change of his through the novels and particularly noticeable is his depictions of Sally. Until part way through 'La Belle et Satan' of 1974 she was a 1960s glamour model with heavy eye shadow, full outline lips, virtually no nose and long hair. From there on (page 130) she begins to have a drawn nose, shorter hair, more rounded cheeks and natural countenance. By the following year in 'D'une Court Tete' she has become the freckle-faced bundle of fun that must have inspired the French TV series and continued until the last novel was published in 1980.
