X-books 1981-1990: Claremont Ascendant

Chris Claremont's X-Men series was selling like gangbusters under superb artists like John Byrne, Dave Cockrum, and Paul Smith. Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter, pressured by his bosses to multiply any hit series, wanted a team of junior X-Men. Thus came the New Mutants, the mini-series focusing on Magik, Kitty, and Wolverine, and inevitably the Wolverine solo series. Claremont used these mandated "opportunities" for frequent crossovers, and for a while it worked pretty well. For the New Mutants, he and Bob McLeod designed a team of teens who were given various reasons to get into trouble with or without the X-Men around. When the monthly grind proved too grueling, McLeod handed art to Marvel regular Sal Buscema. Then Bill Sienkiewicz was allowed to pursue a controversial but ultimately successful art experiment.

Later, Art Adams burst onto the scene with a hyper-detailed style that inspired so much of the art in the next ten years. In his wake, ambitious artists like Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld and Alan Silvestri gained enough buzz to unseat Claremont.
