Cartoonist VERA BROSGOL
Vera Brosgol was born in Moscow and her family moved to upstate New York when she was a child. After animation school, Vera was a story artist at Laika in Portland, Oregon working on Coraline through Kubo and the Two Strings and was head of story for Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio. I read and enjoyed her 2011 graphic novel Anya's Ghost from First Second Books and passed the book along to my niece. While working at the library, I ran across her 2017 Leave Me Alone! children's picture book which was named a Caldecott Honor Book. I greatly enjoyed her Plain Jane and the Mermaid. As a library worker, I have a special appreciation for Lyric McKerrigan, Secret Librarian written by Jacob Sager Weinstein.
I met Vera at the First Second booth at Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle in 2018. For the Return to Sender book tour, Vera was interviewed by Family Style cartoonist Thien Pham at Bookshop Santa Cruz in May 2025. Thien marveled that Vera was taking on a prose novel after graphic novels and picture books. The story is set in New York City and she dreaded the thought of drawing cars and fire escapes. A prose novel was her answer to the dilemma.
