Gil Kane

When Jack Kirby left Marvel Comics in 1970 to work at DC, Stan Lee faced a major reshuffle. He moved John Romita Sr. to Fantastic Four, leaving The Amazing Spider-Man without the artist who had defined its modern image. To fill the gap, he chose Gil Kane, already a highly respected creator. Born Eli Katz in 1926 and raised in New York, Kane had worked for multiple publishers and collaborated with figures like Kirby and Joe Simon. After helping shape characters such as Green Lantern at DC and returning to Marvel in 1967, he arrived on Spider-Man with considerable prestige. His run began around issue #89 (1970), and he quickly made an impact with #90, depicting the emotional death of Captain Stacy. Kane’s dynamic layouts, strong anatomy, and dramatic perspectives gave the series a more intense and cinematic feel. In 1971, Kane and Stan Lee produced the famous “Drug Saga” (Amazing Spider-Man #96–98), directly challenging the Comics Code Authority by publishing an anti-drug story without its seal. The success of these issues helped force a revision of the Code. Around the same time, Kane illustrated the darker and more experimental “Six Arms Saga” (#100–102), blending superhero and horror elements. His most influential contribution came with The Night Gwen Stacy Died (#121–122, 1973), written with Gerry Conway. The death of Gwen Stacy at the hands of the Green Goblin marked a dramatic shift in tone and is widely seen as the end of the Silver Age of comics. Kane’s main run lasted until issue #124 (1973), although John Romita Sr. occasionally filled in. During this same period, Kane also penciled several intermittent issues of Marvel Team-Up (#4–6, 13–14, 16–19, 23), handling both series simultaneously. He later returned to draw Amazing Spider-Man #150 (1975) and Annual #10 (1976). Kane’s work on Spider-Man helped define a darker, more mature era for the character, leaving a lasting visual and narrative legacy despite often being overshadowed by bigger names.
