Watt, J. Millar
J. Miller Watt (1895-1975) was a terrific British cartoonist and illustrator, whose best known work was Pop, a daily comic strip which was the first adult oriented comic strip exported to the US from Great Britain. "Pop" was mostly amiable, often hen-pecked, and prone to the occasional groaner of a pun. What separated Watt from his peers was both his drawing and pacing. Watt employed a very fine, pared down line in Pop, as opposed to his later magazine work, which was full of pen & ink flourishes. The narrative pacing in Pop was quite clever, as Watt would often allow the gag to unfold in the second-to-last panel, using the final panel as the response to the gag.
J. Millar Watt's original Pop comic strips are very, very scarce. It seems that they syndicate in Great Britain destroyed most of the examples. I consider myself very lucky to have run across three specialty drawings by Watt, from different periods of the strip.
