Gerber died four days ago as I write this and while I've always thought he was the best writer ever in comics -- a true genius (making connections that aren't obvious to others) -- it's become obvious in the online outpouring of what he meant to his fans and friends that he touched legions. Friends of course have special stories but Gerber's fans were so touched by his stories that they feel that they know him. Yes, he was a genius and his writing was funny but at its heart it had heart. He wrote about the foibles of people, the social stupidity we have to go through to live and he didn't take shortcuts. He tried to be as honest as he could and his humanity came through because he was writing about us -- all of us.
