I've long thought that Jack Davis is one of the most underrated cartoonist/illustrators in the field. We seem to take for granted the genius that is Jack Davis, maybe because we expect the incredible quality from him over and over again. I don't know if there's been a more prolific artist whose worked in comics, advertising and illustration. The man is incredible.
I've told this story before, but since this is my Davis gallery page, I'll recount it. Years ago, Charlie Stern, former comic book artist and photographer, lived in my neighborhood. I didn't have many chats with Charlie before he passed away, but I do recall one about his EC days. He told me that Jack Davis was a real procrastinator when it came to his work; that he'd wait until the end of the deadline, then would turn in the most beautiful pages anyone saw. One of the self-portraits in this gallery refers to that procrastination.
