John Rosenberger Romance Art

After working at ACG and Archie (drawing the Fly and Jaguar) Rosenberger became a fixture at DC in the latter portion of the 1960's. Known for his women, Rosenberger drew issues of Wonder Woman, Supergirl and was the regular artist on Lois Lane for over a year. Before that, and almost like a right of passage, Rosenberger drew many romance jobs for DC... some he inked himself and some obscured by the inks of the "house style" of Vince Colletta or George Rousous. Even then, his wonderful figure work shined with beautiful girls and handsome men all dressed in the current fashion and hair styles. Rosenberger drew a number of stories for DC's romance books including Falling in Love, Girls' Love, Girls' Romances, Secret Hearts, and Young Romance from 1960-1974. As the popularity of the romance genre waned in the early 1970's Rosenberger did work on other DC titles like Strange Sports Stories, Superman Family, Wonder Woman, and World's Finest Comics. Perhaps his best remembered work was on Zatanna and a long run on Lois Lane. He also co-created Lady Cop with Robert Kanigher. In 1974, Rosenberger abruptly left DC to ghost pencil The Phantom for Sy Barry, whose eyesight was beginning to fail him. He drew this strip for about a year and was about to return to DC to draw Wonder Woman when he . suffered a heart attack on April 22, 1976. He took about two months off to recover. In August he was diagnosed with cancer, and he died on January 24, 1977 at the age of 58.
