Elzie C. Segar (1894-1938) needs little introduction. He was a journeyman cartoonist when he introduced a certain sailor into his strip Thimble Theater in 1929. Popeye soon took off, and took over the comic strip.
The items in this gallery came from an auction in May 2010, with the material being auctioned off by a relative of Segar's. Personal material by the famed cartoonist is quite rare, especially things like illustrated letters.
