Ok, here's a mystery for you all. Like all men of a certain age, one of the first and best memories of our beloved Marvel Superheroes was seeing them in their not-so-good, and yet CLASSIC 1966 syndicated cartoons produced by Grantray-Lawrence. The seller I bought from didn't really know what he had, but pointed out that it was signed by someone named "Baron". Knowing not only my comic book history, but my cartoon history as well... I knew there was a journeyman animator named Tom Baron. And by 'journeyman', I am NOT referring to the quality of his work... it was always top notch. I am referring to the fact that he seemingly worked EVERYWHERE! From the 1940's through at least the mid 1980's he turned up all over the place... from Fleischer to Filmation and even a stop illustrating comic books themselves, he was very prolific. So, on the cheap I took a chance on this piece and bought it. When I opened the box, I realized it was indeed a cel... but not a hand painted one. It looks more like a transparency people my age would remember being placed on a Transparency Projector in grade school. I looked up a bio of Baron and again found his list of credits to be very large. But there was something interesting... while I could not find him linked to Grantray-Lawrence... I did not see him doing ANYTHING in 1966. That's very unusual for him. What I did find was him going from job to job with different animation producers steadily until 1964... then disappearing till 1968! So in 1966 he COULD have worked for Grantray-Lawrence, or even an affiliate that carried the cartoon like WOR in NYC. The reason I mention an affiliate like WOR is, back then local channels used to sometimes use a 'Title Cel" as a bumper for commercial breaks. This Title Cel IS in the style of the great promotional cartoon that helped sell the series to all the affiliates. So my theory is this is a Title Cel used as a bumper to go to and from commercials designed by Tom Baron! Mike Burkey saw this piece and told me he has art by Baron just like this and we'd put our heads together to figure this out. But he's not gotten back to me yet. So you all read my theory... any of you have any information on this? I'd welcome it!
