Alien Worlds (unused cover) 1988 by Joe Chiodo (1958 -) 24 x 31 in., oil on heavy board This painting is from 1988. It was produced and then not used as a cover for the 1988 reboot of the anthology series "Alien Worlds." Joe Chiodo's professional career started ca. 1982. He has worked for several book companies as well as every major comic book publisher. Today he concentrates on fine art paintings for galleries and collectors as well as continuing his illustration career. "Alien Worlds" was an anthology book published by Pacific Comics and headed by Bruce Jones. There were 7 regular issues (1982-84) and a 3-D issue (1984). After Pacific went bankrupt, the final two issues were published by Eclipse in 1984-85. Another stand-alone issue 1 was published by Blackthorne in 1986. Chiodo had done the Pacific Comics covers for #1, #7, and the 3-D special issue (Dave Stevens, Frank Brunner, and John Bolton were other cover artists). Eclipse re-branded the series as "Alien Encounters" and published 14 issues (1985-87). Chiodo did the cover for issue 1. Eclipse got Bruce Jones back to give "Alien Worlds" another go as a semi-annual Prestige Format series (May, 1988). Unfortunately, only one issue was ever published. This piece was likely the planned cover for #2, which would have been Chiodo's 5th cover in this extended series. More importantly: It's 2023 for Set's sake. Where are our sky scooters?
