DescriptionAnother sports metaphor in the editorial column. On August 31, 1939, the Soviets ratified the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, secreted parts of which laid out how Germany and Russia would divide up Poland. On August 31, 1939, Adolph Hitler issued Directive No. 1, ordering the invasion of Poland the next morning. And on August 31, 1939, Marvel Comics #1 was published. Poland was invaded, in schedule, on the morning of September 1. Here is an editorial cartoon from September 2, in the US, of Hitler "kicking off" the war. |
