Description

FIRST:
This cartoon celebrates the opening of the 1953 MLB season... I am assuming it is SPRING TRAINING, as that is typically when new vegetation starts popping up and you can see the many little heads with baseball caps popping out of the ground. I love the level of detail put into the piece by Mr. O'Mealia. The dead growth in the back-right, the little heads with faces and caps coming up, the lines showing the ground contour, the sun's seams with the wording embedded, the use of negative space within the sun and to the left of the piece drawing the eye from left to right. The iconic little lion Leo would always include, on and on and on. Just awesome!

SECOND:
When comics and sports come together! This picture was created by Leo "the Lion" O'Mealia. Leo was a sports cartoonist for the Rochester Herald, the Rochester Times, The Globe and the New York Daily News. He would always include a cute lion somewhere in his baseball art. Leo O'Mealia was also known for his work on early issues of Action Comics, Adventure Comics and Detective Comics in the late 1930's.
