Description

Though he's worked in every genre going, I first recall Gene Colan's work from his run on Batman when I was a lad, and wanted something that would embody that, plus he did a marvellous story whilst there featuring Batman, Robin and a Golden Age character, a vampire called The Monk. Thanks to me shillyshallying around as to what I wanted in the picture, it took a firm but polite note from MRS Colan (The redoubtable and delightful Adrienne) to point out that all I needed to say was 'Batman and Robin with a vampire theme' and trust Gene to do the rest. Of course she was absolutely right, so a HUGE Thank you to her. In the end I got all three characters, and not just a classic Batman shot (I love the way his hand is protectively on Robin's shoulder), but the best Colan Robin image I've ever seen. It's perhaps worth bearing in mind this was done a short time AFTER Gene's 80th birthday. His use of pencils to give darkness and shadow texture, atmosphere and a personality has never been remotely paralleled in my opinion, and I consider myself one of the luckiest folks around to have such a magnificent piece in my collection!
