Jim Mooney was the definitive Supergirl artist of the Silver Age. Well into his eighties, he continued to delight us with pictures such as this one.

This shows Supergirl with her "pets", the super cat Streaky (as of this writing, featured out of context in the Krypto cartoon show) and super horse Comet. Back in the 60's comics actually tried to appeal to girls and Supergirl, which was the back feature in Action Comics produced some archetypal fantasies. One was a super cat, who obtained superpowers through a kind of kryptonite that was practically never mentioned anywhere else in DC continuity, a kind that gave earthlings super powers.

Comet was an audacious concept. He was a centaur who was turned into a horse and given superpowers as a kind of compensation. Unknown to Supergirl (as far as I know), Comet would turn human when a comet came by. A Supergirl owning a super horse that was secretly a hunky guy, that has to be some kind of girlish fantasy. I'm happy that, in this picture, Supergirl is flying alongside Comet. I think that, in context, having her riding him was twitchy.
