This is my all time personal favourite piece by john,love the fear and loathing in ryans expression.
the pandora stuff is real wildstyle,i remember as a 17/18 yr old back in the mid 90`s i would hoover up a few poodles legs of sulphate and let rip on a sheet of a2 or a3 with pencil and pen and whatever other mark making implements i could get my paws on,the results were nowhere near as spectacular as johns stuff but i had bloody good fun anyway!....kids dont try this at home! speed puts worms in your ears!

oh ya f***in` dancer!(celtic expression of unbridled joy) i`ve just found a complete collection of crisis,so i`ll be having them as well,just for johns work you understand,my copies being long scattered to the mists of time......you can get used to darkness and foods overrated anyway!
i just got myself on ebay and i found a complete set of johns zombie world comics with pat mills,needless to say i ordered them and they should be arriving soon!...can`t wait! i`ve never seen that stuff.I would have let my loved ones starve and go without electricity for a week to buy them! but they understand and we`ve seen a few ray mears programmes on tv so we can forage for food and build an adequate shelter,we`ll survive! i took the day off work to search for them...bollocks to the boss!
i`ve just remembered that i saw some of johns work "back in the day" in a booklet that came with a cd i think it was called trans europe express i think it accompanied a tune called "kaned" i certainly was at that point in time! so my memory on that score may be a little hazy!

it`s a real treat for someone who only ever saw john`s work in print to see his working process,you can really see that he approached his work instinctively as indeed all the best artists do
this image is so perverse! you can really feel the joy john took in creating his magical mind warping artwork!
I really feel that the message in johns art and indeed his life was very much one of empowerment in the face of the most awful circumstances,there is such poignancy to these images,massive respect due to his wife,behind every strong man theres a strong woman!

I still have the magazines that this story was published in,and to this day i dont think i ever actually read the story,i just grooved off the artwork getting lost in the line,he was the graphic equivalent of william burroughs! a real assault on the senses
I remember when john`s work on dredd was published back in 93 various timid and blinkered souls who perused the megazine wrote in whining that johns work was giving their granny kittens and their kittens conniptions etc,and by way of response john wrote a really eloquent and articulate piece about the real global savagery that was taking place at the time,that message which he so brilliantly distilled into 100 months is even more relevant and urgent 20 years on,the guy was a visionary,a modern day william blake!
John must have been relatively young when he did this work, 21 or 22 or thereabouts,i think theres a real quality of insight into the dark side of human nature,a depth of emotional honesty. you look at ryans face and you can see the reptile in the eyes,see the demons boiling beneath the skin and smell the vodka on his breath! If johns inspector ryan caught you smoking a spliff he`d probably fit you up with a bag of brown as well and you can be sure of a good kicking in the cells "slipped down the stairs in the custody suite m`lud" when i read irvine welshes "filth" i had ryan in mind!
love the judges face in this page,its like Orwells comment "if you want a picture of the future imagine a jackboot stamping on the human face for ever" its the face of the new world order,chilling!
I love killing joke,seen em live several times up here in glasgow,oddly enough i had picked up on the link between 100 months and that album,but i had thought it was a case of genius round the world stands hand in hand and the shock of recognition runs the whole circle round,great minds think alike etc..thats a great piece of history,and thank you so much for sharing it,I recall he did a portrait of jaz coleman in nemesis
If memory serves I believe Pat Mills stated in the introduction to the titan books collection of johns nemesis work that his stuff was like wild electronic music,only hicklenton`s art could provoke synasthaesia! as i look at this stuff I can hear early killing joke and skinny puppy,I really love this image
I vividly recall when I first saw this stuff in print circa 89,school took a back seat as I rushed out and got myself an a2 art pad and a few rotring rapidographs...that was me hooked,it`s an honour to finally see the black and white linework as the reproduction in the original comic was very murky and blurry,powerful stuff!...i remember he did some wonderful standalone images for deadline magazine,i think they were named "aggresiva" possibly after the front 242 tune of the same name I showed `em to my art teachers at secondary school and they were freaked! i think i got expelled shortly after!...best career move I ever made!

I loved Johns take on the psychopathic Inspector Ryan,his third world war stuff was a massive personal influence,like Albrecht Durer on acid...wicked stuff!
I recall seeing this piece on the "heres Johhny" documentary.....jesus h christ its awesome! has a machine ever looked so mean!
I recall during a phone conversation way back in 1990 John saying that there was a possibility of him working on Slaine,it was a big regret that i never got to see it,now i have and it was well worth the wait,fairly stirs my celtic blood!..Thank you so very much to his wife for posting these beautiful images we need more of this energy on the planet
I recall reading about this piece that john was asked to tone down the genitalia but would not compromise his vision to suit the sensibilities of the editors....you`ve gotta love the integrity,it`s what made the guys art so powerful so primal and so passionate,i`m having my eyes peeled open once again! love it!
