I would recommend the Kid Eternity mini-series next. It was his breakthrough work, and I read an interview years ago that said he painted the whole book because everyone was doing it. This is from his site:
"Duncan Fegredo made his debut in US comics with Kid Eternity, a book he decided to paint in full colour for no better reason than ‘everybody else was doing it’. This was followed by several works with Peter Milligan for DC Comics' Vertigo imprint, including the critically acclaimed Enigma.
Fegredo has latterly collaborated with writer/artist Mike Mignola on his signature creation, HELLBOY, drawing Darkness Calls, The Wild Hunt, and The Storm & The Fury. Further collaborations include The Midnight Circus, The Beast of Varg,u and Giant Robot Hellboy, coming October 2023."
As soon as I saw this image... I was like, wow, that is an iconic cover. But you already covered that fact in the description.
I've always visualized this as like a punk album cover. Unmistakable, timeless, unforgettable!
I'm glad this found a good home with a collector who appreciates it. When I bought this, I drove down with my wife from the Twin Cities in MN to Chapel Hill, NC to pick it up, 22 years ago. 17 hours each way. We got to spend some time with George and his family before returning home. It has always been in the top three collecting highlights of my life. A somber, meditative piece by one of the finest artists of his generation.
Ah yes... when someone cuts you off in traffic, and you pull up next to them to yell at them at the stoplight... and see this guy looking back at you. Wave politely... and floor it! Just a fantastic commission!
The movement on this just boggles me. Here comes a bad day! Love this painting.
That's the stuff right there! Saving history one page at a time good Sir!
Whimsical, moody, magnificent - deeply reminiscent of those fantastical illustrators of the late 19th century!
I am not surprised that this was one of the very first to sell. The image is timeless and iconic. Just masterful!
Stunning. Nicely finished. Exceptional. It's such fantastic linework.
Magnificent. I remember this art from when Gretchen and I visited, 22 years ago. Just incredible.
The specific use of solid black inked areas as far as directing the eye in the individual panels is just astonishing. Thank you for posting.
WOW! It's like he's channeling Ian McShane from Deadwood in that last panel. Highly underrated storyteller, just fantastic at panel progression. Must have been a hoot to chat him up for a few!
It's the quiet ones that get you and wiggle into the heart. Not an explosive action piece, but unquestionably it definitely checks the boxes! Kudos!
BAM! That is just spot-on and the movement is fantastic!!
I would love the same image, but with Maggie from the Simpsons.... Great stuff!!
Wow, you have been killing it lately. That incredible Woodring and then this! Happy Valentine's Day to your collecting habit! Well played Good Sir.
Wow, just wow! Very visceral. Sublime as well, the use of nominal color is just unparalleled. Love it.
Yes Sir, quite pretty! That early Wiliams/Pratt/Muth stuff from that time frame really rings my bell.
There is a stoicism to this warrior's face that is timeless and eternal. Life is suffering, and in that journey can be found redemption. Probably... at the end of his pike! Always just a favorite of mine!
Just superb. Great movement on the action and the detail is fantastic!
Jeff, I am happy to have it and appreciate you sending it back out into the world for a new caretaker! Thanks again, Kevin.
A sheer delight. Congrats on a wonderful acquisition!
The fundamental and technical understanding that Kent Williams brings to his art, in my opinion, makes him AI-proof. His work transcends the abilities of computer emulation and puts him in the rare air of the finest artists of his generation. Art is as art does. Magnificent!
Just the other day I was wondering how long until this was going to pop up on CAF. Fantastic acquisition! Congratulations!
Prime period Pratt. Very visceral. Excellent acquisition. Congrats!!
Beyond fantastic! Congrats on a wonderful acquisition!
I love this homage! I've done the same thing, I have it in storage somewhere as well - but a different skull. Thankfully - yours turned out better. I should ask Phil - I think its in the angle of the brush to define the paint / grain flow in a specific manner... like calligraphy. Regardless, thanks for sharing.
I saw this one as well when he offered it online and thought it was great! Congrats!
Just fantastic!! You get all the best Biz!!
I always found Frank's POV on panel construction to be just extraordinary! One of the shots is from SHOE level! Holy cow!! Glad this found a good home.
Splendid, splendid! And the hat trick as well: prelim, pencils, inks! Congrats!
I've always loved the onlookers pointing at Marvel in this shot, as if they blinked and he was suddenly there - the extraordinary among the ordinary, like they realized this was a moment they would remember forever!
John, this is lovely. For myself, I also remember that end of the decade as an era of personal discovery for the love of painted art coming from George, and Kent and Jon and Scott. All of them flourished and grew at such a rapid rate as artists, it was as if a decade had passed in their artistic evolution every time I saw a newly created work. Thanks for the jaunt down memory lane!
