Great image! I love the inclusion of Flotsam and Jetsam!
I love Alex Garcia's art because it reminds me of the great George Pérez!
Any behind-the-scenes reasons why some headshots, or more precisely some tags, have been changed? Dragonmage by Ultra Boy!? IMO the change doesn't work, perhaps better if it has been Karate Kid because of the racial look! Computo by Kid Quantum? The change's OK! Star Boy by Brainiac V? Sorry but the headshot doesn't work for Brainy (missing the "headband")!
Legionnaires and his/her ancestors! I would have loved to see Brainiac V with Vril Dox and perhaps Strata & Garv with Blok (hinting that they may be Blok's ancestors).
This illo needs to add Box/Roger Bochs, Box/Madison Jeffries and also Windshear flying around Nemesis (there is enough space). Also other missing are Persuasion, Pathway, Goblyn, Manikkin,...
I like the use of speedster "Balm", Academy student, from Legion vol.3 (Baxter series) #24 & #47!
Mysa Nal's reflections as the Hag and the Black Witch but no White Witch. She seems to be in her normal Naltorian form, so shouldn't her hair be reddish and not , as it seems, black or am I wrong?
I love seeing forgotten characters from the Legion lore that nobody use or were deleted from the official continuity.
I would have loved to know the origin of Starlight and Starbright: where they real people or only energy manifestations?
Perhaps it's my imagination but in the public, I see:
- 1st row: a Branx from the Citadel (Omega Men series), a Jaquaan, ???
- 2nd row: a Bolovaxian?, 2 Dominators, Tigorr? from the Omega Men, Demonia from the Omega Men, a "classic" Durlan?
- 3rd row: ??? , a Circadian, ???
- 4th row: a Citadelian (Omega Men series), a Gil'Dishpan,
I suppose that with a better resolution or a colored version of the cover, I could confirm or find the missing characters!
Missing the artist's name: Dean Juliette!
I love seeing "DC Super Stars"!
I would love to see the hidden panels under all the paste-ups of the multiple pages and even I would buy an edition without the paste-ups as a complement to Phoenix: the Untold Story!
The Skrull "Skrullian Skymaster" is a retconned character that would be the equivalent of the Justice League's Martian Manhunter! He appeared briefly in the Squadron Supreme LS (1985-86) #1, 4 & 9 and more prominently in Squadron Supreme: New World Order (1998).
These headshots belonged to the newer members plus two modified one (Mockingbird and Wonder Man) after the roster was seen in the Handbook Deluxe Edition (vol.2). They were for the Avengers Roster published in the Avengers vol.1 #300.
Artists: Allan Goldman (All) , Russell Payne (Finisher) ???
The cover is signed by Vic Moya!
Missing Ultraboy and even Andromeda or Supergirl!!! Clearly we have all the more powerful members of the Legion in the strenght department and members with gravity-manipulating powers, so he should have been here. Perhaps, he's missing to put the focus on other Legionnaires as Monstress or Gears!
Interesting, I know the connection between the Time Trapper and Polestar, but with Atmos and Tellus? They have had 0 interactions/connections with the Time Trapper that I do remember. So I'm curious to the "behind" story!
I love the original cover and I love the reinterpretation using lots of Academy students! This reminds me of Legion (Baxter) #14, the 1st Legion story I could read after I 1st met the Legion in the original Crisis on Infinite Earths!
Great illo seeing the classic versions of the characters. I would have called this Blood Ties (similar to the Marvel crossover) because it's for blood relatives, so reason why no husband/wife pairs! I would have loved to see Laurel Kent but at least, we have Laurel Gand/Andromeda, the only post-Baxter Legionnaire present!!! I suppose the relevant-in-story Tornado Twins were left out because they aren't Legionnaires but what about Invisible Kid II and Computo?
I see that in the cover, the Academy student speedster has been named Velocity Lass (by the penciller?). Although she hasn't be officially named by DC, the name previously used by some non-DC sites seems to be Balm!

One question: If the story is about Mon-El, Mogo and Teen Lantern, why under Data File 056, is it written Rond Vidar in Interlac? A change of plans about the featured character or a small mistake?
By chance, the "Sden" of the title is the long-forgotten minor enemy of the Legion?
Tyroc should win this fight because his sonic powers are more versatile than Banshee's and even he can flight without using his powers thanks to his Legion ring!
Did you forget to write the artists' name? It's signed by Isherwood!
And the pendrive, does the circles represent Banshee's symbol? Why not putting Tyroc's? I don't know why Tyroc's symbol was skipped in Who's Who in the Legion #1 but you can find it (next to Timber Wolf's) in History of the DC Universe #2 (1987),
Shouldn't the symbol in the pendrive be Mon-El's? Isn't the symbol appearing Magnetic Kid's 3rd symbol?
Mon-El's symbol was "m el" written in Interlac.
This cover reminded me of Shangalla, the resting place for dead heroes!
I love the appearances of Legion Academy students Urk and speedster Balm!
Although Highfather appears in the Saga, the 5th Servant of Darkness is Kalibak (the Servant with the Mace).
Well J'onn J'onzz already was in the Legion universe. He did appear in the Legion vol.4 (Five years gap) #43-48 & #50.
Yes, it's Antonio Stefanacci that appeared during the Great Darkness Saga and more relevantly also in the Magic Wars. I don't see Antonio as too obscure because he has his own individual entry in Who's Who in the Legion.
For a moment, I thought he was Extraño from the New Guardians from the Millennium crossover.
I love the Handbooks and Byrne's covers are so great. A pity he couldn't draw all 15 covers (he missed last four #12-15 because of he leaving Marvel because of the Superman's situation).
I think Byrne was very perfectionist and he wanted to include all the characters (excluding non-powered/depowered ones and teams) but curiously Odin is missing (also M.I.A. at the time)!
Also missing Nimrod (perhaps a later addittion to the contents) and missing Nuklo (perhaps considered as a depowered character as Morbius, also excluded in the cover). Then we have missing Nitro or could he be the character "between" Moon Knight's legs? And then, under Orka, we have Phastos??? So it seems that originally, this issue extended past letter O but after the cover was done, it was decided it was better to start #10 with letter P.
A tiny Phastos is included in the next cover but Paladin is curiously missing (perhaps he was going to be skipped but Stern using him in Avengers #251 "saved" him, making him a later addition).
Perhaps people haven't noticed it but I like the homage to the Legion logo used in Legion Baxter #61 during the Magic Wars arc as it seems it will be the regular logo for this new arc!
I love the Black Witch using something similar to a futuristic vacuum cleaner, although she doesn't need it to fly thanks to her Legion's Flight Ring!
Great image! Seeing the preview/miniature of the cover and "Homage to X-Men 95", I wrongly thought the homage was to X-Men 95 (1999) with the character in the corner originally being Jean Grey/Phoenix. IMO in the image, Charma reminds me of Dark Phoenix!
Great idea, the addition of Charma at the corner. Is it a coincidence that all 4 X-Men are replaced with Subs while the 4 Ani-Men are replaced by non-Subs?
Great!!! It's the full team of the classic Legion of Substitute Heroes I (so no Karate Kid, no Comet Queen, no Cosmic Boy,...) including Auxiliary members. I suppose the visible legs belong to Double-Header, the only "relevant" member not fully seen in the pic!
Great recreation! This recreation cover with the Legion immediately remindded me of Nardo (I didn't need to see his face in the ground). He's one of too many one-story characters from the Legion because they couldn't be easily used in other DC series! Like for example: a Batman villain could easily appear as a Flash villain and vice versa.
I always thought of Nardo's story to perhaps being retconned as him secretly working for Universo and so the story would be a precedent for "The Universo Project" arc (you have already Brainiac, Saturn Girl and Chameleon Boy as Nardo's prisoners with only missing Dream Girl that had just left the Legion to accompany expelled Star Boy, so Nardo missed/didn't think about her).
Is it my imagination or reject Samson's face reminds me a bit of Chris Hemsworth's? Has Jean Sinclair used him as a reference/model?
Is there any reason why the original cover doesn't appear?
Well it seems the tables have been turned! I love the cover although I think Radiation Roy's armor perhaps should show a bit of the damage from the previous cover and the radiation symbol wasn't present in the previous cover except if Roy had the chance to change the armors between issues!
Sampson = Samson + Simpsons???
I really like this cover with "Sampson", my favorite unnamed Student Academy. I would have loved to see more of the students in the Legion series. IMO it seemed as if Levitz had some future plans for them, specially with Westerner and Mandalla, because of their individual entries in the Who's Who in the Legion, perhaps for some future story with the Legion of Substitute Heroes II.
Wow, talking about obscure characters, I didn't remember who was Meta! He only appeared in Legionnaires #81 (last issue of the series) where he (apparently?) died or perhaps, he went to the alternate universe from Infinite Timelines!
I'm mostly a pre-5-years gap Legion fan: so although I have read most of the later Legion material, my memories of those issues fail a lot because they aren't specially memorable to me and I don't remember the small details and I miss some references and fail to recognize minor characters.
I love seeing here the Justice League but I expect/want to see more of the Academy students: Herculean Boy/Samson, green-skinned speedster Balm, Flotsam & Jetsam/Skreeak,...
The original WCA cover is one of my favorite ones! I have almost all the characters identified but I have a problem with the "head" under Calorie Queen. The "head" doesn't have any special features: no mask, no hat/cowl, no distinguishable alien features, no color,... It's only a regular "head" although because of the hairdo and no mask, perhaps it could be Energy Boy,
I have finally identified all the "Rejects":
Top: Transporter Boy and Lara Londo (Timber Wolf's sister).
Bottom: Herculean Boy/Samson, Energy Boy, Tiger Girl, Thundra Girl and Neutro.
Well Unicerso saw her as a real threat in The Universo Project arc (Legion Baxter #32-35) mainly because of her strong force of will/spirit although in that arc, she was also seen by Brainiac as one of the 4 smartest Legionnaires (in #34). Also remember that Dream Girl was who altered Ayla Ranzz's powers from Lightning Lass to Light Lass!
Under the corner box, is that (poor dead) Variable Lad? At first, I thought of Dr. Gym'll but his nephew is a better option!
Also we have Computo/Danielle Foccart (Invisible Kid II's sister)
I always liked to call him the Huntsman and imagined him being a descendant of the Wild Huntsman from the Global Guardians! Also another option was Olympian, a descendant of the Olympian (also a member from the Global Guardians). The Global Guardians could be considered an early version of the Legion but with members from diferent countries instead of planets!
I love this kind of covers with so many different characters. The problem is that sometimes we need a characters guide to identify everybody ;)
Although I love seeing Grimbor (one of the few Legion's villains with his own individual entry in the original Who's Who in the DC Universe), Furball isn't among my favorite Legionnaires (5-years later Legion was too dark for my tastes, I'm more of a Levitz's Legion fan) and I was hoping for more Academy students.
I love how Alex García's art reminds me so much of George Pérez's, so he's perfect in reimagining his covers.
I love the use of the Academy students, specially some of the most unknown ones as Urk! I think that Adventure Comics (2011) missed the chance to show us some bits about the unnamed students seen in the Baxter series and prefered to use newly-created characters (perhaps due to Phil Jiménez). So I want more unnamed Academy students!
It's great the extra addittion of the corner box with the headshots although it's a "Marvelous" thing.
I like to call him Olympian like the Global Guardian character, perhaps he could be a descendant of him or related to the Wonder Woman universe.
Don't call it Box! It could be called something has Cam (camera), Rec (recording device) or Com (comunication).
