Farewell to one of the all-time legends of comics. While I never met him in person, I'm very grateful to have had the opportunity to get this sketch from an online commission. RIP Sal Buscema.
Glad you liked it! I see that you own Colan's original (and I admit, I'm jealous--though I'm grateful that I also have a different Colan Dracula page in my collection), so I'm glad that you appreciate this homage.
Loved his work on Micronauts, and glad to read that you hope to keep getting Micronauts sketches from him! (If I ever had the chance, I'd like to get a sketch of one of my favorite less-remembered supporting characters from the book: Slug.)
This is indeed Keith Giffen, using the pseudonym "Ian Montgomery" for this story (I'm not sure if there was any particular reason). The text page of the comic gave it away when it listed the creators' credits and said "Ian Montgomery plots 'Lobo'"--which was actually plotted by Keith Giffen at the time. I got my copy signed by Giffen at a convention in the '90s, and he signed his own name on the cover and his "Ian Montgomery" name on the splash page.
Just discovered your posting of this and the genuine article. I also own a counterfeit of this sketch--I bought it through an ad in the Comics Buyer's Guide over 30 years ago. I've always had my doubts as to the authenticity of mine, but I was hesitant to confirm it one way or the other. While I'm disappointed to learn that mine IS a fake, it's actually a bit of a relief to know for certain. (Especially since I got mine in the days when original art and sketches were fairly inexpensive, so I didn't lose too much.) Now I'm just determined to save up for a real Art Adams sketch...
Every Gene Colan page is a classic, but this one is especially outstanding!
Glad you enjoyed it! I'm very pleased with how it turned out.
Thank you! Always enjoyed the Charlton horror titles, especially the Ditko stories...
An excellent commission! I like the shout-out to the original scene in Man-Thing #21, with the monogrammed "E.D" handbag establishing that this is indeed Elsbeth Duhl from issue #21. Nice bit of detail tying it in to the original story!
Very nice! Always wished that David Lloyd had actually drawn a Batman story.
That is an incredible piece! Although I have to admit, I kind of wish there were also "one minute later" versions of the two vignette panels on the bottom of the original cover...just for amusement's sake.
Thanks! Boyette is one of my favorite underappreciated artists.
Wonderful that you were able to commission a sketch from him. RIP Jay Disbrow...one of the often-overlooked greats!
A wonderful cover by a master of horror. Bernie Wrightson will be deeply missed.
Wonderful! I was delighted to see her at the convention...I got a sketch of Magneto from her, and it turned out beautifully.
Probably my favorite opening page from the entire series! Colan's mastery of facial expression really shines in her reaction shots in the top three panels.
Vosburg inked by Nostrand...I always love combinations of two distinctive artists you wouldn't expect to work together, especially when the unlikely combo works out so well! (I remember some other odd pairings from some of Marvel's other '70s anthology books, like Gil Kane inked by Ralph Reese, and Jim Starlin inked by Mike Ploog...)
Wonderful idea for a jam sketch! I don't know what conventions are lined up in your area in the future, but I hope you'll be able to contact more of Moore's collaborators, such as Jim Baikie (Skizz), Ian Gibson (Halo Jones), Steve Parkhouse (Bojeffries Saga), etc.
