I watched John draw so many convention sketches during the 80s. It was amazing, as he would never use pencil, but just start his layout with a ballpoint pen. This one started out as just a normal ink sketch, and as he was working on it, I asked him if he would be interested in adding some color. My brother and I by this point had started bringing our own various art supplies with us to the cons (such as the set of marvy markers John used here), as most artists at that time weren't bringing much more than pens, pencils, brushes, ink and paper to do sketches with. We ended up with a lot of 'sketches' that became so much more due to that practice. Thankfully, John accepted the invitation to include the color here and it took the piece to a whole other level!
My brother and I had gotten to know Steve and John at various conventions over the years and also bought some artwork from them through the mail, etc. This list from John was included in one of those mailed shipments, along with a letter from which I determined the date.
Yes, this was from Comic Showcase. I recently found some other correspondence I had with them at the time, so adjusted the description accordingly.
