Byrne really was good.

(When I started reading "After being presumed dead for 5 years," I thought you were talking about John Byrne.)

Thanks, Rubén. I like Sam's storytelling layout here and off-kilter perspective in the second panel. The last panel is indeed quite impactful. I probably mentioned this before, but I can't rewatch Saving Private Ryan because its opening and closing scenes are so graphic and heart-rending. It's like you are in the battle being shot at. On the other hand, the dialogue and scenes in the middle of the movie struck me as contrived, writing school stuff, further discouraging me from a second viewing.

Although I don’t have Peter's encyclopedic knowledge of WWII, I have read a lot. I visited the Normandy Beaches twice and Bastogne twice, including for the 60th anniversary memorial ceremony of the “Battle of the Bulge” in 2004 (which Tom Hanks also attended).

I visited the Normandy Beaches about a month before “Saving Private Ryan” was released. After returning from a business trip that Friday, I went straight from the airport to the film's final showing at a local theatre (I did that for Batman vs. Superman too). I could not believe what I had just seen. I could not sleep, so I  read about D-Day all night, then attended the first showing the following day. The opening scene was far more difficult to watch after having read all night.

I don’t think I have seen the movie since.

Given how modern artists don't want to draw this character in full figure, the demand for a vintage Perez piece already done to perfection would be a quite high.

I recall the Joker Fish issue turning me onto Rogers, then finding the Mister Miracle issues as a result. After this issue, Golden pencilled the last three. The first one he did looked nothing like peak Golden, but the next two were great. Keeping an eye out for one of those. Good observation about Byrne.

As wonderful as the art is, I find the dialogue just as captivating. Just 19 years after the end of the war, a comic book for kids reflects the lingering animosity towards the Japan. Also like how the story has Marines facing, not only the facing enemy forces, but the enemy of jungle as well.

If one is going to rewrite an origin story, you better make it count.

And boy, did Johns nail this . . . taking one of the most beloved origin stories and making it mean so much more than a lazy retcon.

Observe a young William Hand in the lower left of page 6. After Atrocitus looses his battle here with Sinestro and rookie Hal Jordan, Billy walks away with the Atrocities maguffin that sucks Latern power, setting the stage for him becoming Black Hand and eventual leader of the Black Lantern Corps.

Well done, Jared! I bid on this as well. Pleased to see a fellow CAF member won the auction. I was a Freshman when my friend Ronny called me at home one weekend telling me I had to go buy the new issue of the Flash because of this great new artist doing the Dr. Fate backup story. Levitz, Giffen and Mahlstedt were a magic combination that helped resurrect DC alongside Wolfman and Perez. I recently picked up a more modest page from 310 a placeholder until I can find one as magnificent as this.
