I missed seeing this in person so wasn't sure which of Alan's covers you got — banger!
It would be a dream book for me too, but all the reasons you list mean I have to live vicariously through others. This is fantastic!
Seeing this in person was a highlight of the show for sure. Huge congrats!
Oh, this was yours??! I saw it and wanted to bow down before it -- I love the original cover & love this one just as much in its own kooky way.
My first ever issue of ST, so this hits that sweet spot for me of pure nostalgia AND being a fantastic piece of comic art.
IMO, the best compliment you can use to describe a "scene" commission is to say you'd love to read the story behind it & that is 1000% true here. Excelsior!
I saw this commission but didn't realize it was yours until now. Chef's kiss x 1000!
When they were on the livestream & DWJ listing who he hadn't been asked to draw yet, I kept waiting to hear Mr. McMahon—this project wouldn't have been complete without him!
Pick any synonym for "fantastic." Like many others, I remember this foremost from the Pocket Books cover, but seeing it up close at Burkey's booth & now here kicks it up to whole other level.
May be comic art sacrilege to say, but I actually prefer this Omni cover to the Kirby version it's homaging.
WOW! I have these paperbacks packed away in a box somewhere, and seeing this beauty is inspiring me to get them all out & bask in those covers. Great, great pickup.
Love the movie, love the suggestion, love the finished product. This is a gem!
As much as I enjoy seeing AA's delightful "cheesecake" commissions, this is an awesome change of pace & really shows power in the art.
Those CAL auction headshots were all pretty sweet, but the work on the helmet here really elevates this one.
So great to see any page from one of my most beloved childhood comics—thanks for the nostalgia hit!
I had to pass up that commission opportunity at the time, but I was excited to see what others got. This is fantastic, made even better by the fact that I would never guess Allred without the credit—but once I see it's him, I can't unsee it.
Wow, you aren't kidding—I liked the printed page, but this is a knockout!
While this isn't a character I ever connected with as a kid, you have some jaw dropping commissions featuring him—this being Exhibit A.
Spot on, Marcus. I could see a blacklight version of this hanging in a Haight-Ashbury head shop.
We can talk about "best" comics and favorite comics, but I don't know that there's ever been a more significant single issue in my reading lifetime. Owning any page from this is a score of scores.
I got to see this page being drawn live and it looked great then, but the finished version with those blacks at full power is KILLER.
Two splashes sum up that miniseries in my memory: the end of issue #1 where he flies up from the Kent house in costume, and then this one. You are one lucky steward of an iconic piece of 80s comic history.
That's Cryll, the Space Ranger's "sidekick" back in the Silver Age.
Grell was the artist when I first encountered the Legion, so it's always a warm nostalgia hit when I see his version of the characters. Great addition to your collection (while you hunt for a Bronze Age page by him, haha).
Late to the party on this — just seeing it now — but what a fantastic get! I remember seeing the ads for this in Bronze Age back issues & basically thinking a child's version of WTF. It looked so... busy. And no superheroes? No thank you. Now I see at it as a perfect snapshot of that particular moment, both in comics & America generally.
Wow, nice score! It's in this zone somewhere between con sketch & full, polished piece — which, in a way, is perfect for these characters.
When I first saw this image, I would've bet money (and won!) on whose CAF collection it would appear in. Aside from the outstanding compostiion & use of gray tones, I really like the choice of characters, which give a nice sampling from across the mythos — this would be an excellent cover for some type of comprehensive "Sandman Companion" book.
Wow, what a cool pairing of artist & character! I never imagined seeing a Western piece in Mack's distinctive, delicate style.
I like all eras of Kane, but the early GL period in particular is such a treat for the eyes: the clean, crisp linework + simple (but not simplistic) panel storytelling. Enjoy looking at this in your home!
This is my favorite kind of commission to discover: something I wouldn't have necessarily thought of as a concept, but once you see it you're blown away.
I was on Team Nick voting to get this one on CAF! While I didn't care for Sekowsky when reading these in reprints as a kid, I can now appreciate the special Silver Age magic he brought.
It's a testament to Matt that he can capture the essence of the Super Skrull in essentially a headshot rather than a more action-y piece where the character's powers could be shown off more.
...and for the record, Bill, I liked this before MA was featured on the CAF update. :)
I'm more of a "liker" than a commentor on CAF, but in this case that heart icon doesn't feel sufficient. While the last panel is obviously the payoff, the top row (& bottom left) are both individually stunning to look at as well as examples of beautiful storytelling. So, so envious — though glad I can at least click over here to stare at this baby!
Love everything about this: that particular Kane vintage, the pose, the character. *Chef's kiss*
While not as long a wait as yours, I've crossed the three year mark waiting for mine. Ken tried to help me too but no dice. The most aggravating part of the whole thing is his willingness to accept NEW clients!
If I'd stiffed this many people & been publicly called out for it, you wouldn't see any trace of me being open for commissions — I'd enroll in the Witness Protection Program & be going by "Ben Kenobi" somewhere.
My very first Batman comic off the drugstore spinner rack & while there are more classic/famous covers in the character's history, this may still be my favorite. Not only EC's (underappreciated) art, but the 'Tec logo, the DC shield — all of it. What a great piece in any collection.
Blue & gray Batman by Adams or Aparo will always be "my" Batman. This is such a joy to look at, a wonderful addition to any collection.
My first ever L&R story & even though Jaime's art got more polished as the series went on, this work will always hold a special place for me.
Fantastic acquistion, Nick! This is one of the covers that epitomizes that magical Aparo B&B era for me — he never looked better (to this fan) than the 20/25 cent cover price era.
I remember seeing this posted as one of his commission samples & wondering who the lucky customer was. Great idea + artist pairing!
The Demon two-parter was the first ST story I ever read & is still my favorite. What a great "quiet" page!
