I agree that she's downright adorable here! She's only meant to be around 16 or 17 in the early L.E.G.I.O.N. comics, so she'd honestly be right at home with the rest of Jeff's Legionnaires.
It's so interesting to see another artist's take on the character, considering Barry Kitson drew her around 70% of the time! I agree she leans much more "good girl" in Jeff's style, which generally skews young and cute.
Thanks, Kavi! Glad to hear you're in agreement! I hadn't really taken the time to appreciate how nice the looser linework in the hair looks, so thanks for pointing it out to me!
You've pointed out before that Phong's artstyle is very reminiscent of magazine models and fashion illustration, and I agree that this piece fits the bill, too! Maybe some 30th-century magazine company wanted "Future Girl" to show off her Legion costume!
Thanks, Kavi! There's a fair amount of great Carani Legion sketches kicking around CAF, and I always hoped I'd come across one someday. The fact that this one is of a fairly obscure character makes it all the better!
I love getting to see an inker's personal style when they're not inking over someone else's pencils! My Larry Mahlstedt Phantom Girl is another great example I'm happy to have.
Thanks, Kavi!! I think when I eventually get Craig to do a Duo Damsel for me, I'll ask for purple paper, so it's like the flip side of the orange he used here.
Oh, thank you! I'm a big fan of the lovely Sprouse pieces you have in your gallery, too! I'm glad to see you've been able to get some good Apparitions from him.
Thanks, Kavi!! I will admit, once I was ready to post all of these, I did find myself hoping that it might inspire you to check out the show a little bit more! ;) My most recent commission from Craig is still in the mail, so stay tuned for that one, too!
Hey, thanks, Alberto! I'm a big fan of those covers you got from Craig, too! I think it really shows how versatile his work is - he does coloured pencils, inks, and watercolours, and he can draw in the styles of so many different animated properties that it's just crazy.
These Canson pieces from Craig are some of my favourite to look at in my entire gallery! The riot of colour and the intricacy of his technique really gets me.
I've seen a few other artists use the same technique, but I find Craig really has it down to an artform. I never get tired of looking at his work!
Thanks, Kavi! It really was such a great experience. Especially for a tiny newbie like me - who was very nervous to reach out to an actual artist for the first time - it was exactly the positive reinforcement I needed to keep going.
To be perfectly honest? I think the pencil version is my favourite, too! I'm definitely going to ask Barry to do an inks-only version for me someday so he can really lean into all the linework from the prelim!
I do love how many different kinds of green Barry used for this one! And I guess so long as you're green with envy, at least that means you might look as radiant as the Empress, here!
Thanks, Kavi! I think the day I ever walk away from any Legion-y Kitson piece is the day I walk away from art collecting, as a whole. It would have been absurd to pass this one up!
Yeah, you know you're really in trouble when either one of them turns to look at you!
You know, Seamus, I don't think the Empress has ever had a boyfriend in any Legion continuity. Maybe she was just waiting for you to come along! ;)
Hey, I don't think I've ever gotten a "baller" comment, before! Thanks!
I like the idea that the Eye is about to float over the Empress's shoulder and get REALLY up in your personal space while she keeps just looking off into the distance. Spooky.
I think every gallery deserves a gorgeous (and gallery-appropriate) piece of Kitson art. You wound up with a magnificent one! Barry's always been a master of expressions, and he knows how to give a sombre moment its due gravitas. He told me once he's always been more comfortable drawing machines than people (somehow?? When he draws people better than nearly everyone else?) and you get a little bit of that with the hospital equipment in the midground. The sparkles in Donna's costume are just lovely, too.
Ohh, that's such an exciting question!! Put a big smile on my face when I read it. I had read Legion comics before discovering the animated show, but it was watching the show that cemented my love for the Legion and set me on the path to discovering and collecting comic art.
I would say that yes, it's an excellent entry point to learn prominent characters, their powers, and their relationships with each other. The show has its own, self-contained continuity, but draws from the comics quite often. It does take some liberties (making Brainiac 5 an android when he was always just an organic alien in the comics, for example), but none of them are too egregious. It is of course a cartoon for kids, so some of the plot and dialogue can be cheesy, but if you've ever watched the 2003 Teen Titans cartoon and enjoyed that, I'd say the vibe is similar!
Thank you so much for the glowing review!! I agree with you on all fronts, and it makes me really happy that you appreciate all the wonderful facets of this painting just as much as I do. It always makes me happy to see L.E.G.I.O.N. art show up on CAF, and it makes me even happier to be able to contribute to those numbers where I can.
Oh, wow! Considering some of the Legion-y Moy pieces in your collection helped inspire me to go after Jeff for commissions of my own, I'm honoured that some of my cards could inspire one of yours! It came out just fantastic, too! And congrats on getting a space background of your own. :)
Thank you, Kavi!! I do always hope that when I post art by a more obscure artist, it'll attract more attention to their work, so I'm glad to hear that Matt's now a bit more on your radar! I definitely agree that there's some anime-y influence to his style, which I guess can also be said for the brothers Moy, so maybe I've just got a soft spot for it. And thanks for complimenting the photo I took! I spent a good ten minutes making sure it was as level and centred as possible, so I really do appreciate you saying so. :)
Thanks, Derek! I'm looking forward to seeing how cute Matt can make a bunch of other Legionnaires, too.
It's just a really good costume design overall, and Jeff was just the guy to do it justice, in my opinion!
I think the colours here are some of the best I've ever seen on a card from Jeff! I've definitely got more space background requests in the works.
You know, it completely went over my head that the Brainy Harem might just persist, instead of going away. Soon they'll be unionizing.
I guess "I've got a colossal surprise for you, Valentine!" might come across the wrong way, wouldn't it?
This style Gene does would absolutely make for great stickers! I think that his art makes for great reference material because he gets all the costume details right and the straightforward poses mean everything is visible.
Thanks, Kavi! I'm glad I got this one right before Valentine's Day, because I don't think there would have been a better time to post it!
Well, Marcus, I imagine you might very well be referring to yourself again, but I do feel obliged to mention that Connor's a pretty big fan of this one, too.
Thanks, Seamus! I figured everyone's first glance would probably be occupied by the obvious, so I wanted to make sure all the other great parts of this card got their time in the spotlight, too! ;)
Well, you've got good taste, but I'll thank you to keep your Valentine's Day interests well away from my fiance. ;)
The truth of it, Marcus, is that I had my eye on this one for a long time as Jeff worked on it, but when I showed Connor he just fell right in love with it. He's the only person in the world who I would give up a piece like this for, but I think sweet little Vi here is right at home in his collection!
Plus, I still live in the same house as this piece, so I'd call it a win-win!
What a beautiful flower garden! You've got your daffodils, your black-eyed Susans, your Easter lilies... and a little Violet.
I love the fun, almost pop art-y colour palette this one has in some places. And a little-known fun fact: Phase's costume (crop top and cropped hair included) is one of my all-time favourites amongst comic charcters.
Having stared at this one sitting in Jeff's WhatNot shop for years, now, I'm really happy to see it go to a good home! Congrats on the pickup!
Now that you mention it, this would make an awesome trading card! Might be something to keep in mind for a future series of commissions.
Thanks, Kavi! I think these two pieces from Derec are the best (and most delightful) commission experience I've had to date! I'm so happy with how both of them turned out.
I'm sure they did their best when making the mold for the figure, but you do have to admit a lot of the bravery and confidence in Garth's expression gets lost in translation. That little figurine has seen things.
Thanks, Aidan! It really is. I particularly enjoy how nicely mirrored the two shots of Live Wire's pose are. Grindberg had a real knack for this sort of thing.
Hey, thanks, Kavi!! Truth be told, I just love the idea of model sheets and merchandise art, but there's not a whole lot of art like that out there for the Legion. So I'm very glad to own such a cool example of it, even if it may be a while before I can add any other art to this particular gallery.
So sad that the first version got lost, but thankfully those colours are still out of this world, even on the rebound!
I feel like if there were a cartoon in Jaime's style, it would be something designed to help sell fashionitsa dolls in various outfits, like a few of the girl-targeted shows back in the day were. It would certainly be a bold new direction for DC's animation department, don't you think?
What a ringing endorsement for Jaime's art!! Would love to see some end up in your own collection at some point. ;)
