What a beauty, Michael!!! I love it. Incredible page. Sean at his best. Bravo!
This is an exceptional watercolor! Great pickup.
Excellent write up, Andrew. Watchmen always rewards those who are paying attention.
I do like those drawings. Very pragmatic drawing style; it fits perfectly with the distillery observation.
So skillfull in a medium known for it's difficulty. Love it.
Much appreciated my friend! I was very excited to share it with you.
Exactly! The piece really speaks volumes on so many artistic levels.
Well then I should be thanking you as well Victor, and all the others who helped ferry it forward! It's moments like these that make CAF special. Glad you can say hello to Wolvie once again.
Anyone else using that much angular shading shapes would get lost in the business of it but Ken just nails it. There's a nice cohesive beauty overall. Great choice in a page!
Absolutely gorgeous monster of a piece!
Lovely to see where this ended up. Congrats!
All the choices here are great: the hair, the face contour, the eye in shadow. Lovely!
This pair set such a high bar for comics and greater art that continues to blow minds decades later. Phenomenal consecutive pages, my friend. Wow.
Agreed that a Keys' still life has no equal!
Just perfect in simplicity of form. Wow.
The dynamic duo of Stuart and Wade making it look easy yet again! A simple page of all dialogue made visually interesting with smart layout choices and facial expressions that draw you in. Love it, Jason.
This is an incredible page! I remember reading this issue and my awe when I flipped to this page. Great pickup, congrats.
You are spot on--the tonal work in this piece is absolutely exceptional from thumbnail to fully polished art. And YES you spotted my favorite part, the zipatone on half the backlit claws, the pièce de résistance! What an exceptional artistic choice to make. Notice that big foreground blade drawing your eye right to it. Your exceptional eye and comments, as always, are much appreciated Jason!
Great connection to the Manga influence, very astute. And good point about this cover doing exactly what a cover is meant to: get you to buy the book of course! Answers await inside!
YES JASON, the hair and gloves!! I'm so pleased you see it too. I come back to this piece often, and each time my eyes hone in on some particular area where the love and artistic care just ooze from. I'm such a huge Wolverine fan, but I agree on the supreme Laura treatment here: pure beauty in details. Even the little highlights on her knees! Gah! So perfect.
Jason, GREAT point about panel 5's use of black to come out of the dream sequence. Makes perfect sense now that you point it out. And the last panel's boxed background to signify the shift out of the dream...brilliant is right. We see many "action" poses in superhero comics, but I always appreciate beautiful "normal" poses interspersed. And this page has them throughout.
Hahaha Dengar DOES look amazing! Truly a feat from that bandaged, goofy looking appearance in Empire. I remember as a kid thinking "who is that guy?" Now he's starring in an entertaining fight scene! Stuart and Wade really do find the perfect balance in their action from the awesome tech right down to the Wookie hairs.
An architectural and story beat masterpiece.
You summed it up perfectly, an exemplary page of the series. I'm glad you snagged it!
Beautiful and delicate, while still retaining that Mignola fluidness that makes his work FUN! Great pickup, your patience was rewarded.
Hey that's a great point. Frank is usually in much darker, grittier surroundings. A unique choice to have the piece be mostly white. Thanks Jason!
Are you kidding me?? Uribe is transcending color palettes now... Quite an innovative piece, espeically with his reference (thanks for posting that). Great choice Matt.
Got a nice look at Boldini's stately Le Comte Robert de Montesquiou last time I was in Paris.
