A cinematic shot in a classic heroic pose for these guys does wonders capturing thie early era of Batmans tenure when it was just him, Robin and Gordon vs the forces of evil. This feels like the final shot of a movie after they'd defeated the latest threat. 

Loved Mike's work on the book.  Out of curiosity, were there any doodles on the back of the page?  The death of Corinthian page from Doll's House I used to own had little "story" Mike and Jones drew... and always wonder if they did that on other pages the worked on.  Anyhow, congrats and thanks for sharing!

Very nice mixture of references from various paintings for a historical feel.  It is especially felt in the gallery of people that all cower and suffer in their own way like something out of the renaissance.

It's like a classic Hellboy from the turn of the century...17th to 18th. I'd totally steal this off the mantlepiece of a some retired seafarer living in northern Scotland in a haunted castle where he longs to return to the sea...and find that big red guy he saw once.

This could have been in a sword and sorcery magazine instead of a horror book.  It's 1969 Wrightson and it's a year before Conan #1.

In the big picture, this book and this cover will be thought of as the most comprehensive record of his career and his lasting legacy.

I'm gonna miss this one. It's an awesome piece in an awesome collection, I'm glad it's in good hands! 

It has a sheer beauty to it with Buscema and Severin both having lots of experience in the fantasy genre at Marvel.  They just knew how to draw to communicate on the page even without using the Superhero style of big and broad action.
