An amazing piece!!!! Kingdom Come is my favorite comic book story, and Barrows simply nailed it!!!!
Love this!!!!!! This piece is actually the top half of a page from issue 22 of Justice Society of America ("Thy Kingdom Come" story arc). The majority of the issue was drawn by Dale Eaglesham. In that story (beginning with Justice Society of America #9), the Kingdom Come Superman was transported to the main DC Universe when the nuclear bomb exploded in the original Kingdom Come story. When he returned to his universe in Justice Society of America #22, he lived out the rest of the original Kingdom Come story. Alex Ross painted this and other panels just for that story, recapturing those final moments from the original story. In any case, this is a true gem. Thanks for sharing!!!!!
It’s been SOOO long since I’ve left a comment on CAF, but your description is really thought-provoking. I don’t know where I stand on the term “grail” anymore. When I first started collecting comic art, I naively thought that I would get a few nice pieces and be done with it. I remember calling a modern (at the time) cover my “Holy Grail” simply because I thought it would be the best I could do at the time – given my assumption that I would stop collecting soon afterward. But as a wiser, more experienced collector commented on that piece, it would be the first of many pieces I would call “Grail.” And he was right. As the collecting bug consumed me and I built my collection over the years, I acquired so many pieces that I could consider to be a “Holy Grail.” For years I questioned myself, “Why can’t I identify ONE piece as my Holy Grail?” I believe that, for me, the answer is that given the decades I’ve spent reading and loving comics, I’ve been exposed to so much comic material that I love that I can’t call one piece a “Holy Grail.” Certainly, I have artists that I love more than others, but there is something to love and admire from each of them. So there are pieces that I own that I would consider as “grails” because they are prime examples from stories or artists that I love. I envy you, Ruben, for being able to identify that ONE piece that you cherish above all others. I’m just not there yet, and I may never get there. However, you’ve got me thinking about it. “What is (would be) the Holy Grail for me?” I’m sure every collector has her/his own reasoning behind the answer to that question. For me, the answer (for now) is, “I have no Holy Grail because I love too many of my pieces equally and for different reasons” – which is okay for me. Maybe I’ll find it one day – maybe I won’t. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter for me because my love of comic art mirrors my love of comics – THERE IS SO MUCH TO LOVE!!!!!!! (Forgive me for rambling, and I hope I make sense).
