Great page! I loved this issue...it's the only issue of the series I bought as a kid but I loved the premise of the race and the Infantino art. Congrats!
Thank you all, and happy new year to you too!
Awesome page...I have the one right before it. Normally I'm not a fan of the heroes facing away from the reader but in this case it works beautifully!
You should see what I had in the early 2000s...sigh...medical expenses forced me to sell the covers to #4, 12, and 23, plus a couple of splashes. But no sense crying over spilled radioactive milk!
Thank you! I had no idea until recently that it was the first appearance of Ava Ayala. She was designed for a cartoon.
I used to own this page once upon a time. Very glad to see it in good hands! Have those pencil panels ever been collected in one place? I can't remember if they were in "Phoenix: The Untold Story."
Haha I can't believe I got this scene past editorial! But I'm glad they let it through!
I hear you...I think they were trying to keep a similar look to the book, as part was penciled by Sutton and part by Frank Robbins, two very distinctive artists, so they got inkers with similar styles.
That is fantastic. You ever want to forget you have it again, send it to me!
Thanks for confirming! And thanks for your interest, but I still haven't recovered from selling some covers and pages nearly 15 years ago to pay medical bills, so hopefully I won't be selling any of these. However, if anyone wants to sell ME some Godzilla art... ;)
Beautiful! Was this inked separately, or is this a rejected version or something?
Great page! I had heard the pencils to this issue were lost so the only art that existed was inks on vellum (lightboxed from copies of the pencils). Looks like that was not the case for the entire issue! Glad there are pages out there. Have you seen many more?
An absolute classic! I think I wrote this one? Can't remember. Gorgeous image, character defining.
Thanks so much for the kind words, Fred! I am glad the story affected you so much. It's one of my favorite things I've written. Interior artist Eduardo Francisco was kind enough to gift me some pages. This cover is wonderful, and I loved Dan's word balloon for Bizarro, "You're welcome!" which was all his idea. I'm glad this found its way to you and hope you enjoy it for years to come!
Thanks! From what I've heard, it does appear this was a short-lived cost cutting method, done once an issue for a brief time. Fun little piece of history!
Aaron, this was done as reference for Joyce (at least that was Arthur's excuse, I think he really just wanted to draw dinosaurs) for a Savage Land story she drew that I wrote for Marvel Comics Presents. Check out my gallery for the Devil Dinosaur piece he did for the same purpose. I remember the SDCC where he had these and I was cursing you for snagging this before me! But I got the DD piece and he gave me an awesome deal on that as well, and now I know you're a hell of a nice guy so I have gotten over it. ;) Take care, CNG
Great cover! Admittedly, I'm a little prejudiced. ;)
Thanks Scott -- and thanks for hiring me for the job and putting me in touch with Chris! :)
