The text page of the comic gave it away when it listed the creators' credits and said "Ian Montgomery plots 'Lobo'"--which was actually plotted by Keith Giffen at the time. I got my copy signed by Giffen at a convention in the '90s, and he signed his own name on the cover and his "Ian Montgomery" name on the splash page.

Thanks (belatedly) for letting me know this. I had no idea! I appreciate the clarification.
