Nice Dondi strip as it looks like a very early one where it sets up that friendly people welcomed immigrants like him and the press and the public will fall in love with the kid.

It is a very early Dondi strip. Dondi was first published by the Chicago Tribune and New York News. The first episode of the strip ran on September 25, 1955. He was a 5 year old in that strip and Dondi ran until 1986. So after 31 years he wss quite an old little boy!

This actually used to be mine. I originally commissioned Stuart and suggested the general pose etc. He did indeed do a great job on this. It was just a 'victim' of needing to thin out the collection a bit and two other Sayger pieces I own were a bit more nostalgic for me. Great pick up. It was also published in one of his sketchbooks, but I forget which one.

Thanks for the back story. I think its just a great piece. I love his work. I also understand that every once in a while one needs to thin out the collection. I am glad you decided to part with this one!

Stuart really nailed this! The colors are great and the abstract look of the flag with the light reflecting off his shield is very original. Almost looks like it could be a dream sequence. One of his best!

Thank you. Stuart really created an amazing piece. I hadn't thought of it but you are right it does seem like part of a dream sequence. Stuart's unique vision is a true gift

Thanks again Robert! He is great using color or B/W and he tends to like to do darker things, but is open to just about anything.

I didn't immediately spot the Joker peeking in from the side. That was a nice touch!

To me, Sayger can be hit or miss, but sometimes the hits can be BIG hits - like here!  Sexy looking Huntress.  Like the pose and the choice to make it more of a profile shot.  Very nice, indeed.  Congrats!

Agreed, any artist will have some inspired works that far outshine their others. This of course is somewhat subjective based upon one's individual taste. That being said I fully agree that this piece stands out and was definitely a moment of inspiration. I also love the profile pose, the position of the crossbow and as alwaysSturats use of light and dark. Thank you for your comment!

Could it be that he is crouching. That big thing sticking out of his chest looks like his knee unless it's a new bat-deformity. Either way, great artwork.

That is a great observation. It would appear that the knee is up under the cape. He may have a leg up on the base of the column as well. The shadows in the wrap of his cape make it difficult to be certain but I agree with your comment

Its hard to believe that this is only the preliminary. It is perfectly complete in its own right. Whelan's work is amazing. Some of his art reminds me of Magritte and then another piece looks inspired by Hieronymus Bosch. You look at this art and want to talk to her!
