Wonderful.  I'd love to see a photo of the painting itself added someday!

Sure. Just added a quick pic as an additional image. Lighting is poor in that corner of my home office, but gives you an idea.

Christ. Thats putting the hours in on an illustration. I hope he got well paid. Its superb..

Thanks Peter. Unfortunately, magazine interior illustrations from this period usually offered modest income and tight deadlines.

Really beautiful. It is amazing how much of the impact of the final painting Harris is able to capture in such a small prelim.

Love this!  Have been a fan since seeing the book 'Tomorrow and Beyond' in 1980.

Thanks. I am a big fan of Berkey's work. I guess that is pretty obvious.

Check out the Science Fiction section of my collection. I also have the painting on the cover of Tommorow and Beyond in my collection.

Lovely. Hanging it must have been very difficult in that spot.

Very nice prelim. But I have always thought this prelim was more likely to be for the cover of 1994 magazine issue 29, the final painting can also be found here on CAF. Quite a few Berkey prelims have inaccurate publication titles written on the back. Have a completely unrelated "Immortality Option" prelim myself which bears no obvious relationship to the book cover.

Wonderful painting, one of his more unusual scifi pieces. Magazine interior pieces can be difficult to track down, great to finally see a larger scan.

Lovely and unusual piece. I like the way it merges traditional landscape technique with his more stylised approach to gigantic scifi structures.

Fantastic. It's a shame we don't see more of Jim Burns' work around here...

Yes - but he isn't the only major scifi illustrator whose work is rare on this site. Many of the collectors who own Burns paintings show their paintings on a website called the Illustration Exchange.
