Dillan was so under-rated. This page is an example of that.
I have a page from the sequence as well: https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1441046
So nice to see a page from my first childhood DC Comic
Excellent unbpublished pencils recaping the also unpublished Steel #6.
Love the 'dawg!
Manning did really nice H-B work. So too did Paul Norris on Dynomutt
Rare Marvel with McLaughlin inks. Never saw his over Sal pencils before, they look nice.
Receiving a comment from the Main Man Marcus on art you created yourself means you have truly made it in the eyes of CAF royalty.
Ostranders's and Mandrakes's Court Sequence in #55 was outstanding. So much so that the one I have is a very rare post mid 80s peice in my collection.
The issue reminds me a lot of the Adventure Spectre's!
I owned this Sal Hulk splash for several years in the 00's. I do miss it. But sometimes you have to trade something to get something.
No Cuckoos Nest reference from me...
Bryant has become a forgotton inker but did very slick work. Bair is far too underated by art collectors.
Love Maurer's work. Was lucky to find a piece myself many years ago.
This page and those like it exemplify the great Dylan/McLaughlin JLA Era
Update:
I was informed recently that a few years ago CGC corrected in on their slab labels. CBCS always had it correct as Sienkiewicz.
Bill Sienkiewicz signed it for me in Oct 2025 and told me it was great to see it again after those many years :)
Those early Romita Jr/Layton IM pages are just as slick now as they were back then! You can FEEL the impact in the forth panel.
IMHO just as special as circa 1979 Byrne/Austin even if I'm not in the majority with that opinion :)
You can tell Jerry loved these pages with all the ink on Grundy and Degaton
3rd Panel has "bothered" me since 1981 :) Here's the thing...In the preview issue (3-4 months prior) Powerful Super-Humans Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and the Flash are like tiny gnats to Grundy, but here Dr Midnight with his average human strength, takes him out with a single punch.
Totally absurd! Thats akin to Daredevil doing the same to the Abomination or the Ted Cord Blue Beetle doing that to Doomsday.
Good to get that off my chest.
So cool and Groo would not stand a chance against Sugar
Tanghal had a nice looking run on WWT as evidenced by this page and others.
Slick page!
Over the years I re-aquired a handful of pieces I let go, so i know how nice it can be. Cue the Peaches and Herb :)
Gonzales deserves much more respect that the Original Comic Art community gives him!
Sometimes a single panel page can "best" an entire 25 year collection like mine, this is one of those times. Wow!
WOW!!!
Slight nitpick; In artists field it should be Keith, not Kieth
Wow! Giella's inks on this page allows the image to comfortably flow.
Hi Steve,
I've owned this cover since 2008;
https://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=444838
I hoping that you will please consider removing it from your gallery. Thanks!
Nice!
Do you have in a "Floatin frame" so both sides can be viewed?
Thanks for posting it after all these years. Glad to see I'm not only one who first now posts acquisitions from 15-24 years back :)
What's funny now is that I bought this off eBay in 2007 and was the only bidder, probably because this was seen as a "boring" overpriced epilogue page that came at the end of a great....
I do so miss those days :)
Lulu is timeless. More folks should give reading the 1950s-mid 60s stuff a chance!
Great sense of motion on Subby's dive! Layton slick inks are outstanding. I think it would have been very interesting had he been the one inking Infantino on Nova
Nice one!
Please note: inks on your page are by Dick Giodano who did JLA 107-109-109 not Frank McLaughlin. Also apolgies for one more tiny nitpick its Dillin not Dillon - I've made the same error myself many times :)
Somehow I missed this great cover when you originally posted... In a total tie my 2 favorite Kubert All-Star Covers are this one (#7) and #13.
I also recall when DC raised their cover price from .50 to .60 it too was a huge deal-breaker for me. IIRC Marvel remained at .50 for nearly 10 more months. During that time frame I had to scale back my DC purchases from about 10 to only 4 per month. I kept only All-Star, Captain Carrot,New Teen Titans and Legion.
Sad to read it was damaged and yes things like that keep me up at night
Grail page for pretty much anyone who was reagin comics in 1979-1980!
Love the inks. Impressive piece even with Mullet Superman :)
When I saw JLa 193 pop up in my search my heart skipped a beat - Nick you know why :)
Love pages with the Prof's disembodied head's on them and this one's by George!
