Thanks! This is not something I purchased. I inked this cover.
Gorgeous cover! The beauty of the Surfer figure juxtaposed against Rune's amazing face… This is better than the Conan vs. Rune cover. Here you can see Barry would have drawn an incredible sad, soulful Silver Surfer. The Surfer would have been a perfect fit for his type of graceful, somber heroes.
Gee thanks, David, Thomas and Davide! When I showed this page to Wrightson at the time it was done he exclaimed, "Oh, it's so good!" I knew it was his kind of subject matter. That was fun! I'm going to finish up some Rune recreations I've had on the back burner and post them on here eventually.
I loved inking this issue and working on the series! Glad you liked Batman: Gotham Knights, Gal!
This is pretty awesome! Joe really captured Jack's eyes…. Nice likeness.
This book is going to be great! Really looking forward to seeing it. Joe rules!
Really nice painting of Joe, Joe! Great color. But why doesn't the cap say NY on it? LOL.
You got a great Rune page, Justin! I still remember the day I inked that back in '94.
Always loved this one... Total classic!
Glad you liked the Batman work. I'm at it again inking a mini-series called Batman: Mortality with pencils by the great Denys Cowan! Not sure when it will be out though because we're also doing a monthly series called Voodoo Child for Vertigo that begins in March 2012!
One of the best pages from Barry's monumental series!
These 3 pages are amazing, Scott! The way Frank captured the classic leaping into the air, clashing and landing shots from Enter the Dragon, Fists of Fury and other martial arts films was flawless!! Ronin was my favorite Miller series and the best, most ground breaking piece of comic book storytelling from the 1980's. The best 3 pages from issue 1!
Saw this for sale at Comicon in the late 90's. Came back to buy it the next day and it was gone... Guess you're the lucky guy who beat me to it. Royer inked it, no question. But I thought I remembered "Toxl the World Killer" being lettered in the open space at top?
You draw women like nobody else! Absolutely loved your APES AND BABES book from Image! SHANNA and THOR REBORN were also excellent... Inspired and inspiring gorgeous work!
Well, there was a scan of this splash on Barry's site.... You can still see a better scan on my site.
One of the greatest story lines in the history of Thor's comic!! Always loved Mangog! I don't understand how these complete original issues of Stan and Jack's Marvel books exist, what with no one understanding their value in the '60's and all the horror stories you hear about the burning and theft of Jack's art while Marvel had it! Coupled with the fact they wouldn't return his artwork to him until the late '80's... Is it because the inkers got their cut of the originals earlier than Kirby, or did The King actually get back some entire issues from "the House of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's Ideas"?
The best short story Jack ever did without Stan! A classic! Saw the DPS for sale at the San Diego Con once. Went back to get it the next day and it was gone... Never got over it. Did you buy that, too?
Klaus really knew how to ink Kane (and a lot of of other great pencillers, too)! There was something special about this combo... It was the closest Janson ever came to resembling Neal Adams' inks. The first book I ever noticed Klaus' name on was a Gil Kane comic.
There's a very similar page from almost the same angle in the Silver Surfer GN. And a DPS version in pencil from the same that Stan and Jack condensed to one page. But this is far and away better than either of those. I remember when Losers came out, a war book was the last thing I wanted to see Jack do. And then it turned out to be excellent! Your collection is a mind blower, Erik!!
Marvel actually did print a deluxe format volume in a limited leather bound edition of only 742 copies back in '95. The coloring is still credited to only Glynis Wein, however it's obviously been recolored in Photoshop following the original colors closely. Marvel released a TP version again in '97 with the original dot pattern colors. But to my knowledge, it's still never been released with the Kirby/Royer cover I saw on this site. So it's been printed 3 times that I know of, maybe more. My friend and mentor Joe Sinnott signed 2 of the 3 for me. He's one of the nicest guys in comics!
That is really something... very original! Love the death face... nice touch!
Wow! My 2 favorite artists... That one's a keeper alright!
Well, I told you I thought the Huntress splash was the best page from the issue and I was glad you got it... Even though I wanted it.
Only Jack could make the death of a giant grasshopper heartbreaking! Kirby was so great at evoking emotion from those who read his stories, with or without Stan. There were many such sad moments in Kamandi... But seeing this art is "happy time"!
One of the nicer commissions I've ever seen!
Cool spread! Rog and I did Batman:GK together for a long time... Those were some good old days!
Very interesting page. Notice in the left bottom corner of the top panel the wave splashing overboard looks like Elric's right hand! I think Gilbert intended it as his hand in the layouts and Russell finished it as water! The way the top of the first panel is broken by the water and the second panel is Elric's POV thru the water are typical examples of the cool panel designs from this great series. And the last panel CU is killer!
I remember inking these 3 pages. I had inked 6 uncredited BWS pages in A&A # 6, but this was my first complete ish. By the way my name is John Floyd, not Flyod. Nice colors by Maurice who did a great job on the whole book.
