This was an interior illustration painted specifically for the "Horror" chapter of Michael's first art book Wonderworks. Intro text by Gerald W. Page was laid over the art.
The book is long out of print but we released an updated and remasterd digital edition that's available on Michael's website here:

I'd be glad to send you a scan of the original spread if you want to see it in its original format.
Thanks! I don't think the tongue lashing worked out too well either.
Love JHW3 especially on Sandman. That's a great get. Congrats!
Thanks, Mark. I had 3-4 other pages from this issue that I've parted with over the years. This was always my favorite.
This is a stunning example of Michael Whelan's preliminary work. Such tight detail and on an Elric piece no less. Whelan still has the original cover illustration hanging in his house, which IMO makes this a doubly nice treasure in your collection. Congrats!
Yeah, thanks. I saw your exchange on Twitter. Too bad he couldn't recall the details on the piece. Looks like you picked up a nice Andrews' cover as well. Congrats on that. ~MJ
Thanks! Coincidentally, this is the piece that I'm replacing your Jurgens Superman cover with. I'd been looking for Howard Porter JLA, and I'm glad you weren't bidding against me.
That's a prelim for DRAGON LORD, the cover for Melanie Rawn's SKYBOWL. Cool piece. Hadn't seen that one before.
It's a prelim for TANGLED UP IN BLUE by Joan Vinge, a sequel to THE SNOW QUEEN and THE SUMMER QUEEN. Not only did Michael do some knock out covers for Joan, he also did some outstanding concepts ilke this one. On TUIB alone, there were a half a dozen that were just killer. Congrats!
