DescriptionSince this (important) nonsense wouldn't fit in the inked write-up, I'm inflicting this on people here.An obvious pastiche (I hope) of the first appearance of the JLA and the Avengers, this Silver Age wannabe was drawn by the Fraim brothers, based on my own Cyborilla character and various obscure public domain (PD) super-heroes. Although here they are "The Planet's Ultimate Super-Heroes!". I wanted the line-up to in some way parallel the original JLA and/or Avengers, so here was my rationale: ''Brave and the Bold' #28 had five heroes on the cover, as did "The Avengers" #1. Superman and Batman were actually members too, but not featured on the cover. So - five heroes it is. I also imagined the comic came out in about the middle of the DC and Marvel releases (i.e. about a year and a half after JLA, and a year and a half before the Avengers). Both JLA and Avengers had one (token?) female character. My favorite at the moment, Black Orchid, is ... not available at this time (for reasons past and future commissions will explain). Fantomah is far too powerful, a bit like having the Spectre or Galactus on your team - not much of a challenge to defeat the bad guy, even if he is an ape. I felt that the Woman in Red was not powerful enough. Nelvana (of the Northern Lights) is a demi-goddess, daughter of an Inuit god and a mortal woman. Originally featured in various Canadian "Whites", she seemed pretty cool. And, Canadian. So she works as a tie to mythology, encompassing both the "token female", the Wasp, Wonder Woman specifically, and Thor in one fell swoop. Plus she has that helmet thing. Nice. Cyborilla is my creation, the Fraims improving on, but staying true to, my quick crude sketch. I think he's neat. He's no Starro, but he's an ape, so there's that. Flash and Green Lantern I characterized as sort of "one power" characters. I think Magno (or Davey?) is cool and has magnetic powers, so they're taken care of. Aquaman was hard - PD aquatic characters are a sorry lot (Shark-Man? Barry Kuda? no thanks) I didn't really care for either Hydroman's original headgear or his cellophane costume over trunks look. So, he's shown here torso up. Also, water. Man o' Metal is strong and invulnerable (did I mention he's metal and on fire?), so he's a Hulk-like brute stand-in. TNT Todd is sort of "armored" - he's a dude in a steel suit, flies, and shoots beams of energy. So, Iron Man is done. Martian Manhunter and Giant-Man ...are out of luck, but I had my five. Superman and Batman are sort of the big guns of the JLA, at least in terms of popularity, but I have tried to avoid using better known PD heroes like the Black Terror or the Fighting Yank, so I went with "lesser known" obscured PD characters, if that makes sense. Maybe they're whom Man o' Metal is calling to off panel. The final cover is served up by the Brothers Fraim (pencils and inks) and Chris Ivy (Sentinels masthead design). It was pretty fun to see the preliminary sketch and they turned it around in short order. Totally need to color it too! Social/Sharing |
