DescriptionThe Sentinels #1 (March, 1962):"The Planet's Ultimate Super-Heroes Do Battle With the Mighty CYBORILLA!" In this issue, Cyborilla attacks the United Nations building in New York, trying to take over the world ... by due process? At least in his mind it is. Given that his origins are so confused (and confusing), it's no wonder he's a little nuts. Something to do with time travel, possessions and mind transfer (or was it a brain transplant - I'm not sure even he knows!). It just got more complicated over the years, so I'm completely lost as to exactly what he is. What matters is he's a cybernetic gorilla, and therefore awesome! Ahh, the Silver Age. Although a bit silly, he proved a persistent threat over the decades, constantly evolving his cybernetic components and his plans. The Sentinels form in response to the threat and a comic book legacy is born. What issue are they on nowadays, like #595 with no reboots (fingers crossed!)? Cool. Different line-up(s) or course, but the idea is what matters. Standard already had some superteams, including the (retroactive?) Golden Age "Freedom Brigade", but this marks the first appearance of the Sentinels as a group. They came after the JLA, but predate the Avengers by a year and a half. If Standard didn't always lead the way, they sure knew when to follow! Roll Call (clockwise from top): Nelvana of the Northern Lights - originally from Canadian comics, the character had less and less to do in terms of protecting Inuit populations, so she branched out into protecting the rest of North America, I guess. Cyborilla - the villain, obviously, with his early tank-like bottom half. By the Bronze Age of course, he had changed ... well, you know; Magno - not sure if this is actually Magno or his heir, Davey, it's not clear from the comic itself; TNT Todd - I guess that gas he inhaled retarded his aging process; Man o' Metal - a bit of a brute, and he's metallic AND on fire, which equals cool; and Hydroman - he can turn into and control water. Sentinels masthead design by Christopher Ivy. See the pencils only for my rationale for the members of the team. PS When I created Cyborilla, I had no idea that this other guy existed. Sigh.
