DescriptionThe Grim Reaper #13 (March, 1942)"Doctor Zombie" In this issue, The Grim Reaper hears rumors of foul goings-on in Eastern Europe. Stealing a ride on a mysterious Nazi-run train, it takes him to a Carpathian mountain-side. Watching from a distance, he sees shapes being moved from the train. After it departs, he investigates and discovers a mass grave - of Nazi corpses still in uniform! Suddenly, a shambling mass moves towards him in the dark - a ghoul from some kind of sick nightmare, a filthy Nazi corpse! After hacking off its limbs does little to affect it, a fortuitous slash of his sword reveals the weak spot - the skull. Later, he sneaks into the secret mountain base of -- "Doctor Zombie", who is working for the Nazis in an attempt to reanimate the dead to serve as an unlimited supply of soldiers for the Nazi's evil cause. Can he stop the fiendish plot in time? ~~~~~ Thanks to CAF-gentleman Kevin Moorhead for pointing me to the artist, David Bednarski. When I saw his stuff, I had to jump on board. This is pretty kick-ass, I must say - it really POPS. I know zombies are pop-culture cliche these days, but they weren't really when I had this idea years ago. (Also, such creatures would likely have been called ghouls back in WWII, although these are under a kind of control, like the Voodoo zombies, so -- the name,"Doctor Zombie", could work -- I picture him as a Rotwang-type mad scientist). deviAtion Social/Sharing |
